What are the seed costs per ha fo hr?
If hr was sown after barley and cut on the 1st of may,for the ground to be cropped with maize after, what do you think I could reasonably expect t/ha of h/r silage in a normal spring based Leicestershire?
Thanks

on some poor, dry ground, we had about 12 tones, cutting in late may, that was summer 17, this year hr was sown late sept, on some strong ground after rape, if we left it to end may, we would comfortably got 20 ton acre. we hope to get 30 acres in for next year, subject to having a good analysis back!
definitely a crop to watch. the alternatives are spring wheat or triticale, there is a spring variety, I think, which would interest us

With rye and triticale I don't know what marketing story has been cooked up but in my experience they both want to be drilled in good conditions and earlier rather than later. There never seemed to be the same 'depth' of breeding as with wheat which, if you chose the right variety, can be sown late behind maize into mud etc. Rye and trit never seemed to have the same get up and go from what I had seen and heard.

they always used to say 'you could sow wheat into mud' I have spun w wheat into ground very wet, in November, and still had a good yield.
but a question for you ollie989898, I could get 4 ton/acre grain sold, with wheat, 30 years ago. why has yield not increased in the last 30 yrs ? as I see it, the only real increase has been on the imput side, have the plant breeders concentrated more on the 'costs' of growing the crop, as there has been no shortage of wheat, world wide, rather than increasing yield. virtually all other crops/animals have moved on.
