Hydraulic fitting size

Stupid question coming from a shepherd.
At what point on the fitting do you measure do determine if it’s a 3/4 inch size, which I think it is. It’s a female fitting im trying to measure. The pipe off the fitting is 3/4inch so does that mean the fitting is automatically 3/4 inch? Hope that makes sense.

If you have some waterline bsp fittings lying around you can just try to fit them, then you have an idea. If it doesn't fit it can be metric.
If you make a photo with a ruler or something next to it it should not be that hard to identify.

Generally you measure the head size
as the tail size is a constant with the pipe size but the head size can be variable.

If in doubt get the caliper's out

Just don't do what my dad does... "It's about a fingernail width"

Thanks @Eden.Agri.AD. So when you say measure the head...should I measure the ‘opening’ on the female fitting?
Basically got a postknocker with a free flow return female fitting but no male fitting on my tractor, so need to confirm its 3/4 inch male fitting that’s needed. Thanks

99% of the time a 3/4 bsp will be a 32 spanner but always better to double check

Just to complicate things if you are talking about 3/4 female qr coupling there is 2 different types/depths Best is to take coupling off post knocker to local dealers/hydraulic place and get one to match

I assume you know you shouldn't put a quick release coupling on a post driver return pipe. They are called free flow return for a reason; any restriction slows down the fall of the weight, heats the oil and generally does no good.

So why do the manufacturers fit them ?

thats why they use a 3/4 return as larger sizer =less restriction
