when I use any of the hydraulic functions on the combine the cylinder with the flexible hose attatched to it which I have established is a damper squirts hydraulic oil oil out at the other end. Has anyone had any experience of removing this (it's not in a very easy to access place) or any experience of it leaking? it's at the front of the engine compartment just behind the cab.

It is mounted under the operator platform on a 98, which doesn't help you, but you can bypass it as suggested. It is not advisable to leave the damper disconnected for long because as I understand, it helps to stops the hydraulic system high frequency pulsation "singing" noise, which presumably doesn't do it any good in the long term.
This is not like a nitrogen filled damper, it is just an welded outer tube with an internal smaller pipe connected to one of the end fittings and the oil just enters one end and exits through through the small tube.
Perhaps @Gapples can elaborate, or tell me I am wrong:).

No you are quite right in your description David, it's just a hollow tube with short metal tubes going in at either end.
It's there to damp any pulsing in the hydraulic system.

It should work away fine without it although obviously Claas didn't recommend that.
They always were prone to leaking/cracking.

Usually called a resonator on a lot of things! If you do decide to weld it, clean it up nice and clean, sweat it with oxy acet to get any oil out of the crack and weld it with MMA. We had much better results doing tractor ones with MMA for some reason
