Hydraulic pipes

We have a Marshall rear discharge spreader and college and there are quite a few hydraulic pipes, how do know where to put each one, apparently there opposites on a valtra, how do know which one to put where?

Have you worked out how to start the tractor
Haha yeah, I can drive them fine, done silage raking, tedding, muck spreading, I can do that, but the implement has always been on, I don't like to ask because it's something that's expected, because it easy, I can put on a PTO and hydraulic pipes but I when there's like 6 I don't know where to put them, I just don't like to ask a simple question that I should know and it looks even more stupid because I can drive them fine

Different implements have different numbers of hyd pipes and different tractors can have a different number of spool valves. Most tractors have 3, some 4, some even more. They should have a diagram on the rear of the tractor showing which spool valve block relates to the spool lever in the cab. I work out what all the pipes do, and then plug them into the tractor spools often depending what they do to on the machine. I.e. the most used set of pipes can go in spool 1 for example lifting something in and out of work, pipes that dont get used v often, for example folding a machine up to go on the road, get plugged in in spools 2, 3 or 4 etc as these are often further away from the operator in the cab. I use coloured cable ties to identify pipes and which spool they go in on the tractor. My drill for example has 5 pipes, 2 are labelled blue, 1 blue tie for the top pipe and 2 blue ties on the pipe for the bottom pipe, I know blue goes in spool 1 on my tractor, spool 2 is only 1 pipe with an orange cable tie on so that goes in the top of spool 2. Spool 3 pipes are labelled purple again 1 on top pipe and 2 on the bottom. That way all the pipes always go in the correct spool each and every time so nothing needs changing in the tractor. The same lever always operates the machines in the same way. Problems come when using machines on different tractors where some spools may be inverted so need pipes putting in the other way round to get the machine to work the same. Other complications can be from hyd pick-up hitches that use a spool valve and hyd top links that can take up a spool as well. No idea if all that makes sense! Basically organise them in a way you can remember each time.

Seems like it should be the first thing the college should teach you, before showing you how to actually operate it.

Once you have a basic understanding of how a hydraulic system works, it should be fairly self explanatory.

You might feel a prat asking, However in my mind there isn't such thing as daft question, if you ask you prove you have considered what your doing and are not 100% sure. If I was your college lecturer or boss I'd prefer you asking instead of some cocky little oik piping something up wrong and damaging the implement because something is wrong that would be daft!

I can guarantee you a lot of people on here couldn't go to their machines and pipe them in correctly.

Zip tie the pairs with different colours or parlour tape with different colours help!

On a rear discharge, the bed pipes might be larger in diameter than the door pipes

By the sounds of it your at an agricultural college. Your there to learn. Don't worry about asking. I've just started a job today and the boss made it very clear that its better to ask than to do something stupid.

Don,t ever be scared to ask a question DanL99!!! That's the best way to learn, we all need to ask questions

Now then.
I used to instruct at local college and if your tutor was any good he would show you all where everything goes.
Golden rule Dan STOP the tractor before connecting the pto up.
Look at tractor spools as said should be colour coded.

As you state, Valtra's are side to side which infuriates me at times, it's so hard to plug or unplug pipes from 1 side of a drawbar

Blue is flow and green is return I think..,. There is plus and minus anyway!

And remember that the first spoil is at the bottom..... Also clean the ports and pipes before hooking up!

Thanks, I'm totally aware of PTO's and have been from a young age,dad never stops warning me, The tutor is new and because we have all worked on farms over the summer he expects everyone to know it because everyone is familiar with driving tractors, I did a lot of driving over the summer but never attached anything, it was already attached, I would like an idiot asking him because I'm familiar driving them

You won't look an idiiot at all if you ask. I"d much rather someone asking me than putting the pipes on wrong and causing damage. The lecturer won't know either but it's his job to show you how to trace the pipes back, pair them up and colour code for next time.
