i am not sure if i should repeat what elderly farmer told me

I have been talking to an elderly farmer in Welshpool market today and I am not sure if I should repeat what he said but as long as no names are mentioned it will be ok
he told me that he has never seen anyone do any good at farming after they have been to farming college,he also said that all farming colleges should be destroyed

I've heard the same view from members of the family, but only the ones who didn't have the "go" to give it a try.
I didn't have the 'go' to give it a try, I did an apprenticeship in carpentry instead.

My kids could do what they liked, but I'd try and steer them away from going to Harper and go and work in a different industry for a few years.

Well I'm sorry. That's a typical comment from someone who, I'm guessing, never went to collage. Yes some people come out/home thinking they know it all. And completely knacker up perfectly good businesses. But that's in the minority.
Of course you go to collage to learn. And that's extremely important. But it's the experience of getting away from home that's really important. And let's face it a lot of kids need to experience life and the world around them.
I was lucky enough to visit Manitoba over Christmas, and learnt about how some farmer's children finish school, come straight home, sit on a big artic tractor with auto steer for months, and don't have a clue what they're doing, or why there doing it.

I didn’t go to agri college, I sometimes wish I had, for the craic more than anything else as some of my friends have really good networks and contacts from their time. I do think it gave me a wider perspective mixing with the townies at uni though[emoji6]. Further education is a very good thing and ag college will suit some where it wouldn’t suit others. A lot of research and technical advice is done in colleges so they are valuable to our industry. I pity this poor blokes kids or more likely grandkids.

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I studied to be a deck officer in the merchant navy before taking up offshore surveying. I have been told a thousand times that I haven't got a clue about farming, from recent graduates of collages and experienced farmers alike.

Despite growing up farming, studying in my own time, and working for others in my spare time.

People don't like to be challenged, and if you have a different opinion and are prepared to defend it, they seek to undermine your learning/experience as opposed to the opinion itself.

Can't agree with that but on the other hand there are plenty that didn't go to school much let alone collage that have done well enough for themselves

Obviously, can't agree with the old farmer but it is sometimes a disadvantage to learn from older family members who have been doing the same thing that their father's did the same way and so on for generations!

College should teach students how to think and make judgements. If they don't do that, I agree, they should be closed! Some old ways are still good and some lecturers have their fancy theories and spout rubbish. Learn to use the best of both worlds.

if you saw the current state of one of your nearest agricultural colleges you would agree! but personally i think going was a good thing learnt more there than i realised at the time and gained valuable contacts

To a certain degree he is right though. Going to agricultural college won't make you into a good farmer or even a farmer for that matter. I learnt more about cows during my year out than I did during my 2 years in college. Having said that I wouldn't have got the chance to work on the farms I did had it not been for ag college. Biggest aspect for me was learning to look after myself, being away from home for 3 years, and of course the social aspect. All in all a good experience but not necessary to make you into a farmer.

Mine was destroyed. Well, shut down. RIP Seale Hayne :(
When were you there? My Grandad was head pig man there in the 70's / 80's. George. Had a black lab which liked to sit in water troughs and smelled like a pig! The place is still standing. Taking my eldest there for a session of laser quest / tag / something in April for his birthday.

Things move on I guess.
