Not sure
Where have all the laying pullets and ex laying hens gone?! I usually have no trouble at all picking up a few hundred of either. Yes I know this whole lockdown thing has had people buying hens left right and centre, but egg sales have also rocketed too. Has consumption really gone up that much?!
What I imagine will happen is when things start returning to normal and a lot of the demand has been filled or people are getting bored of hens/no longer want them due to work commitments etc, hatcheries will also be going overtime to supply them and suddenly there will be a glut of hens, much like there has been with PPE.
Am I missing something, is there a reason I don't know of for the lack of availability?
Oh, and I may as well mention I am not paying £9 a hen for 20x 2 year old hybrids from Doris off of gumtree ?

There has been a shortage of eggs so everyone has kept there hens in for as long as possible, it's caused a bit of a squeeze in the chain but will sort out over a few months if things return to something like normal.

The decrease in spent hens for sale is mainly due to packers stating in contracts that producers are not to sell spent hens to the public, in an effort to reduce the number of backyard flocks which will in turn help keep more control on things like bird flu etc
