Interesting thread. I noticed the cows in France were trained to walk on one side of the road. In Ireland, someone (usually a small child) will drive them over to one side to let traffic pass. In the UK, they are left free to wander and the motorist is expected to wait. Just maybe my perception and not yours, but interesting. The first two are republics, the last not so. I've always considered this the last action of defiance by the peasant as cattle have always had priority over wheeled transport! One last remaining legal two fingered gesture to an occupying force, first the Romans, then the Normans, now the townie.....?:ROFLMAO:

Still common her to see sheep and occasionally cows walked down the lanes, but it’s noticeable the increase in motorists getting shirty with the shepherd, have one neighbour who will run semi wild sucklers off a moor and straight down the main road to his yard, usually accompanied by a tractor charging down the road in front and quad bikes with blaring horns behind

Neighbour often phoned and asked if we were free, then we would block a side road to stop the cows going that way , to be honest it’s quite a site seeing a herd charge down a steep twisty main road !I used to tell the mrs to bring our truck after they had passed whilst I walked along shooing the slower cows, it helps to give a thank you now and then to the motorists cowering behind the wheel

Need more of it tbh, tame the entitled townies who now populate every village

When I moved here in 2009 it was a sleepy beautiful part of West Suffolk but now with so much building the place has changed forever and not for the good sadly. Nobody has time for anyone or anything

Anyway enough, I only opened the thread thinking it was another drought thread !

Off topic, but I have always wanted to return to the south lakes village where I am from, my mum said on the phone the other day, it’s unrecognisable with new builds, cars double parked , and no one having the time of day for anyone.
Very sad how things “progress “

We were glad when the local dairy man stopped walking his cows, half a mile there half a mile back twice a day, roads perpetually covered in slurry along with everybody's vehicles.

Son took over mid 60s and went to zero grazing.

Which village was that? Went back to tend my grandparents grave in Urswick a couple of years ago and it hadn’t changed a bit, although one of the pubs had sadly closed.
They weren’t in farming though, moved there from Barrow in later life.
They loved seeing the stock about.

Greenodd, my mums now at Grange, the villages through the lanes, from ulverston to barrow were always nice, Urswick, Gleaston, leece , always picture perfect, been a long time since I was there .
I don’t know if they are still there but on the main road through lindale in Furness there were warning lights for the dairy herd crossing the A590, that must have had a few heart in mouth moments!
