I fell off a ladder last night

I had a few sheets on the roof of a shed that had come a bit loose and were rattling.
I decided to feed silage first then get the ladder and go fix the sheeting. I was up the ladder about 14ft with a screw gun when the ladder just dropped from under me.
I fell backwards and landed on the silage safe and sound. I'm a bit stiff and sore today but nothing broken or bruised.
I was fairly lucky, had I not fed silage first and it cushion my fall, I might not be here.

As we come into busy season on farms, especially spring calving farms, we need to remain vigilant. I should have gotten dad to drive tractor and have me in the man basket.

Be safe

Glad you're ok. as a general question, what is the best way to keep a ladder secure? thinking of painting the house this summer, but no access for a basket.

I am facing the same and will be taking a leaf out of the sky installers book and will be drilling in some rawl bolts wit a screw in eye around first floor level to secure the ladder with, when finished remove the eye and screw in a bolt to keep them clean, once painted over I can't see it being noticed (altho I do hav a dashed finish on the house). Can be used for cleaning gutters etc going foward

I got some of these last year for a different job (for securing gates to make temporary overflow lambing accommodation in bad weather). I was impressed, - they’re cheap (20 anchors for a tenner) and they’d work well in this application.

This is a great idea. Thanks.

on this day 2 years ago, I would have been sitting in my armchair in the livingroom with the mother of all leg casts on, having fallen off the ladder on the 15th Jan and ripped my knee apart. All I was doing was changing the felt on the roof of my shed in the garden and stepped off the wrong side, having only turned the ladder around 10 minutes before.

Ladders are evil

someone to hold it is alos good as if anything does happen there is a second person there. other than that I say luck, as anything can happen and you could be down for any length of time before you are missing never mind found.

Also, if you are born to be hung you wont be drowned, meaning if its your time to go its then.

about 5 years ago I was on a roof, many times before doing as always as safe as possible I thought, anyway stepped over a skylight and my foot slipped. 14ft ass first takes time especially when you know what all can break your fall. Luckily I landed on concrete beside a gate and missed an rsj in the roof and few 3"angle brackets laying close by, I recon hard concrete was best in this case. When I knew I was still alive I put my hand on the gate and got up, surprised no real pain, got into the van and the fella with me drove home. next evening went to get an X ray, couldn't see anything too much bruising around my ass and belt line. a week later I drove back and same thing on x ray too much bruising in same area. 18 months later I pushed hard and after a few more x rays my back pain was said to be mechanical skeletal damage to lower back, also showed wear and tear in shoulders, I was only 28 at the time.

Three months later went back and fixed the skylight and the rest of the of the job I was doing origioanlly.

The second person no matter who I think is the safest thing to have when working at heights or any suspect dangerous thing.

Glad you are ok
