Have put the engine back in but after a couple of minutes each time its started up it blows oil out from the dip stick, it was all cleaned & ship shape whilst rebuilding it so can't see where the problem lies I know it points to pressure in the sump but as I said everything was cleaned thougherly & couldn't see any blockages anywhere new piston rings were fitted etc, any one got some opinions.

Is the breather in the side of the engine definately clear?Does it still blow out oil with the dipstick properly screwed into the tube?
Thanks for your reply, the breather was clear but will recheck again the dip stick thread is a bit messed up so doesn't screw down tight, but should there be that sort of pressure in the sump to cause it to come out of the dip stick not knowing to much about this particular model tractor.

Do you not think it may just be the oil being splashed up by the crank etc? The dipstick should really be sealed in. Is it blowing fumes out with the oil?

No fumes blowing out, I suppose it could be what you said, oil being splashed, will try to get it tightened down better as perhaps that's the problem thanks for your advice.

Can you explain exactly what you have renewed in engine also what were the symptoms before

Bought it cheap from someone as a restoration project in the long winter months it had been stood up for quite a while so new there would be problems, only drove it round the yard a couple of times when the engine started to knock & soon ceased up, on investigation found a crank shaft bearing had got mangled up, replaced that but engine wouldn't turn over, took the engine out & had the crank shaft looked at & found it was bent, so bought a new one & an engine rebuild kit, had to replace a damaged con rod to, there wasn't any sign of oil coming out of the dip stick/ filler pipe when we bought it but it wasn't running long to find much else about it & having a loader on it it's awkward to have seen.

Check the breather pipe but I cannot really think that would be blocked. If you take out the dipstick during running these engines will splash oil out quite quickly.

Did you replace the liners aswell as the piston rings? If not the new rings won’t bed in to the shape of the old cylinder for a long time and will need hard work and a lot of luck!!

Yes the liners were replaced at the same time as were the piston heads.

Will have a look at the breather again today, but looking more likely now to be the filler cap/ dipstick not being able to screw it down properly due to the worn thread so may need replacing.

Is it the filler/dipstick cap with the T handle on the top? You need to hold the clamp part and turn the t handle to expand the internal grip a bit before putting it back into the filler tube. If the expanding part is just spinning in the filler tube when you turn the t handle - then you can turn the t handle for ever without getting it to seal the tube.

Not same i know but mates IH 175 drott has that expanding type dipstick on all fluids
Hold one half and tighten the t handle as explained, might have to loosen , contract it first ??
Keep us all informed

think it's sorted now, was able to tighten dipstick down a bit more that seems to have cured it for now at least, will look out for a replacement,

Did you fit new oil pump?
What about the rest of tractor? I would be very surprised if handbrake works!!
No havnt fitted new oil pump it's seems ok, your right about the hand brake, the loader is struggling to raise but put that down to low fluid level the rear linkage is ok though, cab is a bit ropey so needs a bit of attention lower rear cab glass & frame is missing so trying to find a secondhand replacement, brakes need an overhaul other than that everything else seems not to bad, then it will need a good sanding down & a new paint job, looks like the winter months are running well into summer months don't get so much time at this time of year!!. Will upload some pics when I have the time.

If you are taking the cab off it for repair - get in and do the brake band whilst its off. Fit a beeper and flashing light to stop you driving off with it still on and it should last a long time. Check the hy tran level and change the hydraulic filter as well. Not a big job.

It won't be necessary to take the cab off for repairs as the work is mostly superficial, but what's it like overhauling the brakes on these, or would I have to take the cab off, good idea about the warning light/beeper, there is a mystery light been put in the cab but Its not working & havnt been able to trace the wiring yet, suppose it could be to do with the mounted beacon but that doesn't work either, but will sort that out later.
