Yeah, people talk about a 4 or 5 week cutting interval now, back in the day it took that long to do each cut!

And anything cut before Devon County Show (around 24th May) was "early"
When I started for same contractor in early 80s we were at constantly all summer. Soon as first cut was done we were back at the first one to start second !

Yes, dad took nearly all summer to do a small acreage with a Ford 3000, JF side mounted single chop, blowing into a tipping trailer with corrugated tin sides. Harvester dropped off, and the trailer taken back to the clamp to empty. The JF belonged to a syndicate. A step up from carting it off the field with a Rex Paterson buckrake. Went back to making hay for a few years before giving up the cows in 1979. No pics from that era at all. Other than my grandmother using a Wuffler...

Ran an Aktiv bagger trailed combine until 2001, doing 20 to 25 ac of oats a year. Some sold but lots stored in a loft and old barn. Low 2nd on the 35x cutting 5ft 6 I think!

We had an IH trailed bagger until 1975, thing is it would likely be less than 20 years old but totally obsolete. A 20 year old combine now is fairly new in a livestock area.

Back in the day, a 7 year old tractor seemed old. Neighbours had " old " David Browns, and Zetors. In reality all less than 7 years old. Not big farms, 70- 100 acres. My current tractors are 30 years old.....

Difference back then was each new range that came out was such a vast improvement in terms of ability, safety features and driver comfort and weather protection that a 10 year old tractor would of looked prehistoric in comparison but nowadays a well cared for 20 year old tractor is stil a nice place to spend a day

The only "mordern" improvment that i like is suspension systems, most other things like guidance isnt much use to me. Be handy for sprayin and fert but wouldnt justify the cost of a fancy sprayer and sower and thing for the tractor roof just to save mabe a ton of fert and jar of forefront a year with not havin any overlaps

Yes have to say some suspension would be nice but stay where I am and can afford to just drive slower

Watching that clip of the Activ reminded me of some friendly harvest rivalry between my father and two neighbours the year he bought our first SP combine. lt was a little Dania (D700) l think with an enormous 8'6" head. Still was bagger only and so still needed 2 operators but took a whole 3 feet more than the Activ on one side of us and 2'6" more than the trailed Dania on the other side of us.
One of them evened things up a bit the following year though when he got an IH square baler. We were still using an Allis Chambers rotobaler for a few more years yet

Our old one is with an enthusiast now, same as the one in video except it had a wooden reel. Did a great sample, with different screens available we used it for cleaning seed. Had a beater in front of the drum oat straw would wrap around. Was a big step up when the Clayson turned up!
