I want to get A "Baler"

But I really need some knowledgeable advice,

But there may even be others saying at your age!

I intend to bale approximately 1500 tons with the intention of no more that 400 tons on any one farm so nobody gets let down by me over committing.
Do I get a Massey, Krone, John Deere, New Holland,
Your choice of a chaser would also be good to know.

Why do I want to do this,
200 acres doesn't swing any weight when I need my bit baled yes "Boys" say they will be there, but by that time its rained and time goes by!

Personally don’t think there’s enough tonnage to warrant a new baler.

You may have an idea what bale size you want, but looking at your location I would suggest 120x70 / 90 / 120 bale size as they’re more cost effective to transport and therefore sell.
I’d discount the 120*70 as you can’t take them in the powerstation if you ever needed too, and discount 120x120 as they’re slightly leas saleable. This leaves 120x90, a Heath QM would be my chaser of choice for these.
As for baler brand, condition, budget, past history would be more important than brand, but I’d try for an MF for ease of repair and parts availability.

If you do buy new, the only one I would eliminate was JD as they’re quite rare and struggle to get weight in compared to others.

1500 tons is 3000 big Hesstons.
Get a smart old well serviced MF 190, it'll do that without thinking about it, spares are plentiful if you know who's breaking old ones, and you can bale with 150hp on the front if that's all you've got available.

Chaser: I always did well with my Traileyre. You wouldn't want to go any distance, but clearing a farm to a central point to load trailers or stack up, I don't think there's anything quicker. They're not everyone's cup of tea, because they don't stack at all, just leave bales in rows.
And they're wide when loaded with 4x4s. Anything up to 11' wide if you pick up bales awkwardly. 9'+ if you get it spot on.

Not quite sure what your situation is yet? Am I right in thinking that you struggle to get a contractor to bale your 200 acres is that in one go or in bits and pieces? So your going to buy a baler to do your 200 then buy another roughly 800 acres of straw out the swath to make the baler earn its keep?

Yes the Contractors around here have some very big farms too keep happy I never seem to get too the top of the list when there work needs doing, be it in small bits or when its all layed in a swath.
For the 800 odd acres, what I would prefer is that I would bale there straw for them at a cost and then Sell it on there behalf. I earn my bit by doing the work but they benifit from what it is worth (or do I live in cloud Cuckoo land).

Should work, several people do it that way. What bale size do you prefer though as that influences chaser choice.

200 acres isn't to be sniffed at, the contractor market down there can't be all played out like it is up here.

If someone falls out with a contractor around here, they simply phone another one 10 minutes down the road and they'll be there, be it for 20 acres or 100 acres! although I suppose we're talking small-ish dairy farms and grassland.

I've been watching onelonleyfarmer on youtube for a few years (since my daily work doesn't apparently put out my flame for farming?). He loves Krone, has had Nh but didn't like it and says that Hesston/Mf has gone downhill.

I know nothing about square balers, so can't give my own opinion.

In the OPs area there are some big straw contractors who would do 1000+ acres a day. Most straw contractors will do the loyal customers first, if someone rings up and says someone’s let them down, they will go and do it but it probably won’t be their next stop.

We used to think Krone are good, they still are but too hard to work on, and parts aren’t the best. If the OP is buying second hand then personally I’d go for an MF, either a 187, 2170XD or 2270 XD depending on budget and horsepower - there’s quite a few steep hills around Royston.

I’d ring Nigel Cowlen, he’ll know of any good ones for sale, give it a good aervice and keep you going through the season. PM me if you want his number.
