Just listened to Sir Keith Starmer saying "it has been a bad result for Labour but I know how to fix it and in the next few days I will set out my plans to achieve this "

After 12 mthss in the job how is it that suddenly overnight after bad results he knows how to fix things ?

He may have been better setting out his plans 6 weeks ago. Having said that the collapse of the Brexit party was always giving Tories a majority in an area that voted 70% for Brexit.

He needs to take the party back to where Blair had it but the left wing won't want that.
He has a difficult job. I think Starmer lacks presence and his shadow cabinet all seem weak to me.

Difficult to see what he can do really.

Whatever happened to that strange fella that ran a fix it programme for kids back in the 70s? Perhaps he would reestablish Labour's credibility....

(Sorry)

I think the only solution is for them to split the party. Some of them are screaming from the rooftops that the party is failing because it's not radically left enough. If that's the case, let the Corbyn types go and form their own party and let the Labour party return to a more centrist position similar to the Blair era as above.

Returning to the Blair position is the only way they might get elected. I saw Alistair Campbell said that the last 11 elections for Labour read: lost x4; Blairx3; lost x 4 which says it all.
I see he has sacked Angela Raynor which.is all well and good but he needs someone inspiring to replace her with.

Essentially the labour party haven't won an election since 1974 and that was a very narrow victory.
In the 90's They converted to be a Tory lite party, were led by a Tory boy and won a few elections.

Since they converted back they have gradually declined.
They differentiated on Europe for a while but now that is over it's hard to see them coming back.
Boris is buying off all their public sector voters by paying them to stay at home.

Afraid Labour's only prayer of getting back into government & then it's a pretty slim one is if Starmer stood down & Andy Burnham took over, wouldn't get my vote but it's probably their only faint hope.

That sums it up.
I can't see where we will get an effective opposition party from.

Good idea for a thread...

I want a credible and effective Opposition for the sake of our democracy; but I'm not at all distressed that Labour as currently constituted is in trouble.

It's a truism that government's first duty is to ensure the security of the state; Labour has people in Parliament who are actively and openly anti the UK as a state, both in its capacity as such in the world, and in in the way its people and society exist. There is no way that most people will consider voting for Labour while this is the case, and rightly so.

Regardless of politics, the first thing any party must accept is 'the will of the people'. I don't agree that Parliament is sovereign - although I accept the legal status quo that it is - since the people are demonstrably sovereign. Nor do I accept that it is for Parliament, HMG or the PM to 'lead' the country; rather it is for them to be lead by the people and to implement the common will.

It's no secret that I'm a supporter of PR - pure and simple, no 'versions' - and am also a supporter of the greater use of referenda in matters that are of fundamental importance to the country. The use of these give any government a definite aim and an absolute mandate for action in any given matter.

No matter what Sir Keir has said about accepting Brexit, everyone knows it's just so much talk, he sneered and still sneers at those he looks down on for voting other than him. And Labour, as a whole, do the same to everyone on every issue with which there is any dissent from their line.

Will Sir Keir be able to 'fix' Labour? Not a hope when he is a great part of the problem and is blind to / ignores the remainder of it. Labour is very effectively committing a slow electoral suicide by deriding and ignoring and insisting on 'converting' the very people upon whom it relied for generations. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

So that's Labour receipted and filed; where will we find effective opposition? The Liberals are equally judgmental and far more irrelevant; Plaid in Wales are unelectable; the SNP are a single-issue joke, with nothing that they can back up with real-world facts. So the Conservatives are in government by default.

I'm a Tory party member, but the current situation doesn't please me - although I'll admit relief that Mr Corbyn isn't PM. We need a decent Opposition, we really, really need one, but I can't see any chance of it in the near to medium future. Andy Burnham...? a paper tiger (with too much mascara), Emily 'thicky' Thornberry, unthinkable... more lefties, not a hope. I Had some hopes for Lisa Nandy, but she just hasn't managed to keep her game up to the right level.

I think there is only one Labour politician anyone's heard of who has the 'right stuff' in terms of intellect, strength of personality, personal integrity and electability to be a PM, and that's Dan Jarvis; but there is not much chance of his achieving it while Momentum are in place. But he's a former soldier, so 'ante omnia armari...' 😐

Must say I had not heard of him but looks like the kind of guy who could save the Labour party, trouble is there is not enough other talent to fill a phone box let alone a cabinet

They need to beg David Milliband to return, not sure even he can save them until they accept their past is the past and the world has moved on however on another forum I'm on there are people whose hate for the Tories and blind obsession with old fashion left wing ideals is going to make it very hard for any leader to modernise them

This is the main problem Starmer has in moving the party to an electable position. The left still love Corbyn and Starmer hasn't tackled this. It always surprises me how many young people liked Corby.
When I think labour I still think.of Corbyn's policies at the last election, I have no idea what Starmer stands for.
I have no idea if Andy Burnham would be a good leader or not. I do think he has the thing that Starmer lacks which is presence. When he speaks people listen, Starmer comes across as weak to me.
