Sorry for the handling pen spam but was curious if this is worth the investment? Was going to build my own but thinking atleast with this any moderations in the future would be easier with this.

I bought an IAE economy race like that a few years ago for £510. It’s alright but only does small amounts of work at a farm - mainly drafting and no dosing. it was bought initially as it is light enough for 1 person to move plus 10 hurdles to make a small pen before we bought the Rappa.
wouldn’t want to be doing a lot of work with one.
i Bought a secondhand heavy duty IAE one the year after and holy moly it’s strong and well built and it’s 15+ years old. Ok if dosing/bolusing 50-60 ewes but any more we put the Rappa DF race on the front so we can can pack them in and walk between. You can’t walk down between those 18” races even with lambs.

I bought the exact same race, around 40 odd gates and a forcing pen for £1500 6 years ago, it’s a good pen, but for the money quoted for the race alone now not worth it.

Got to remember, inflation has driven the price of everything well above where it should be.

You say not worth it at that price, but it'll be what needs to be paid to get a shedding race like that...

True but could you build one with sheets and timber for a fraction of the price? And the OP , if I’m correct wanted a permanent handling system?

Also wants something easy to move if he makes alterations to the yard...

Expensive but worth it, IMO - our permanent yard it was always the shedding race was the first part to start falling to bits. If I was building a new one, I'd put in a race like the OP posted then build pens off it.

I don’t think it’s worth it . I have some fairly new IAE gates and some Ritchie stuff too .
Have to say the quality of the IAE stuff isn’t a patch on the Ritchie. Very lightweight and already got a few tech screws on the sheeted hurdles to keep tin on them and one hurdle with a walk through gate on it has had to be welded back together 🙈🙈

We have a Bateman economy race , it was about £500 a few years back , the idea was something portable ( ish)!
It’s now used pretty much at the main farm with up to 600 ewes going through, moving them soon becomes weary
I made a permanent pen with a 16’ by 30” race on away ground and it’s ideal for drenching etc just walk in behind sheep and pull them behind as you treat them , much faster
The Bateman is now set up on one side of the lambing shed for drafting off lambs , cull ewes etc

I got one in 2014. I added a 2 foot pen alongside it and then a 5 foot pen alongside that. Nearly all handling done in the 2 foot. The 5 foot fits in beside a wall which is why it's there. Very happy with it all.

Why gave prattley or rappa never made a decent shedding gate to go on the front that allows you to stop the sheep as well. Is just me that finds the shedding gates on them garbage?

I want one for my alligator too - been saying I'd make one since I got it (I just use one of the sheeted hurdles at the moment, but a proper shedder would.bw a lot better for the job)

but them iae stop/drafting gates are a bit clumsy imo heavy so slower reacting. i ve had a set of it for donkeys yrs bought it in a job lot of stuff off farm , the race side on mine were not high enoghh for us but easy fix is to add a couple of short lenghts of square tube that will just fit snuggly over the two legs longer than them to a length that suits you and a tech screw or 2 to hold in place.]our side panels are i think 42 inches high now .
i cut the sides of the stop gate bit at the front of the drafting gate and now use it just for drafting not stopping for lambs that are let out of the weigh crate a bungy cord holds it gently one way

Youv got too be sharp with the gates on prattley, I find if your unsure it’s best too draft too one side and trap the ewes head while you figure out which way you want too send it

our poldenvale is best for drafting if youre not totally clear on what youre sorting, seperate ' scissors' / folding stop gate at the end of the race and lighweight drafting gate after it
can disrupt flow a bit but depends what your doing and how fast runners they are and how fast (or slow :cautious:) you are ................. as you get older :(

Sharp enough with it it's just they're a pain in the arse when your drafting ewes out of the left gate and a lamb and ewe run up together you can guarantee the little sh!t runs up the left hand side of her

Same with the Glendale engineering one a light thin gate with a separate stop gate. You can shed them as fast as they run if it obvious what you want to shed just press the gate against side of the sheep it goes through then the next sheep can't get through
