Hi all,
I have an old 4kva Diesel generator. The genset has given up the ghost and i dont really need it. It does however leave me with a good diesel engine. I would like to build a saw bench somehow by mounting a pulley on the redundant shaft. Would like to operate it by a foot pedal so when you take foot off pedal it takes tension off belt and stops drive.
So anyone done anything similar? any good places to start? will only be sawing up logs for woodburner but want it to be as safe as poss. The engine is noisy so only i will ever use it with ear defenders.

Just don't.

Thats why i said it needs to be safe!!!! else i'd be a hypocite! Could i convert a tractor saw bench to Generator driven? What pto HP does a small bench take? or could i mount a hyd pump on shaft and attach to a splitter?

I'm really not a fan of tractor driven saw benches either, apart from a very few. It would have to be one of the modern type which are fully guarded before I'd be happy to use it as a start, and by the time you've bought one of those you might as well just use it without modification.

Just think what it takes to put something like that through the relevant approval process, and consider if you have the necessary skills to modify it and then requalify to a standard that would meet your own exacting standards. The fact you're asking on here suggests you probably don't - as most folks on here wouldn't be either.

I got a s/h PTO driven tilting saw bench from Posch. Here is a video of a motor driven one. It wouldn't be difficult to make something similar.

The logs from mine drop into the tractor bucket which in turn is tipped into the trailer. Perfectly safe, except for those who insist on steadying a log in the cradle with the hand (I sacked a guy for doing that). No need as the blade holds the log in position. It would actually be quite difficult to cut an arm off unless the operator was incredibly stupid (or inventive!).

It was you!

I knew I'd seen a safe setup, but couldn't remember the name of the machine or who had posted it.

There are several of the same design. I find it very fast to use. Drop a log anything up to 150mm (?) in diameter into the cradle, push the cradle forwards with your right hand and push the log along the cradle with the left hand. As the log moves to your right, the cut log drops into the tractor bucket. Like a knife though butter and very fast to use. Brilliant! I was going to cut logs this afternoon but the rain came on.

saw benches are a bit gay :sneaky: if you ask me everything here is logged with a chain saw soon as soon as possible after its felled then split .
Keep it simple stupid

TBH, you say 'it wouldn't be difficult to make something similar' - I disagree :(
I have a similar Binderberger pto driven 'rocker' bench. The cantilever guard almost fully encloses the blade and closes as you progress the cut exposing the minimum area possible. The sides of the blade are covered too. The carrier is well made and has anti slip 'teeth' in it. It's chunky Austrian engineering and powers up to 1000rpm safely and smoothly and the TCT blade whistles as it works. The whole kit is rock solid.

Try 'making' all this at home with a similar degree of safety and efficiency - if you can

Post 11 is interesting.... I think I'll just sit this one out as I already have the saw so no need to make another!

I don’t know if they do them big enough for what you’re talking about, but these things look amazing for keeping yourself in one piece

I made a pto sawbench from scratch. I wouldn't let anyone else use it and I stop long before I get tired but no reason to think it isn't safe.
Fingers don't go anywhere near the blade, the blade stays in one place (unlike a chainsaw) and as the logs fall off they go onto an elevator that takes them away. Sawn logs building up around the blade is a danger.
It will do just over 12" diameter logs and tbh anything bigger than that and you are starting to struggle to lift them on which is when things get dangerous.

As for gay, I can guarantee you wouldn't have a cat in hells chance of keeping up with a chainsaw.
This is the one I copied. https://www.newhavenpower.com/Woodsman250_Buzz_Saw.html

From 6:20 you can see how it could be adapted to an engine, you can also see how the sawn logs build up. I really don't like to see that as they can catch in the blade and you have to get too close to the blade to clear them.

A fergy sawbench is pretty safe , whats fergy 20hp ish on a flat belt drive .
Rocking table design, probably the first.
For me chainsaw for anything over 5 " ish .smaller ,lighter branches are to dangerous near a chainsaw.
Also as time passes im abit more inclined for that 4_5" branch to just go through chipper, unless it's hard wood 🪵.

I use a home made one of these for small stuff. Most of it is 3x2 and 6x1 screwed together.
