Identifying jerseys in the parlour

Just setting up a new herd of jerseys. Have heard freeze branding doesn't work for them, what other ways have people come up with for identifying them in the parlour just would like something easier than climbing up on top every time to check a cow. Cheers Joel

Part of our milk contract is that the cattle have to be pure channel island so it that won't really work for us

Guessing it's to identify different amounts of meal for each cow, so just put different coloured tapes on tales for each amount of meal needed.

Numbered necklace only - cheapish
Numbered necklace with EID tag and parlour ID - expensive
As above plus heat time - ‘kin expensive
As above plus rumination - how much?

Depends on herd size. Get to know quite a few by their character over time

One of the joys of a pedigree crossbreed herd is the ability to identify cows by colours even 200-400m away!!!😆

Had a herd of jerseys once.. tried all sorts..you could try anklets. But they can get shitty just like brands. I ended up putting collars n numbers on them with out of parlour feeders then flat rate or tapes in parlour..however ID the stock in fld bulling or as they came in was a challenge. Some of the newer id tags are readable from a distance with correct gear? Try anklets..cheaper..!!

Ha. We used an mri bull on the heifers back in the day. Turned in some excellent cows. Probably our highest ever solids cow over 720kgs of of 1.4 tons of feed. Trouble with her was she was a lazy bully on the tracks which were poor at the time. Regularly in the autumns she would stop half the herd until II got vocal with her ! Stooped using the bulls after a couple of yrs as he would also throw large calves.
