If getting over the Corona virus takes 14 days to isolate ..

Then why aren't we all isolating for 2 weeks so we can all get on with our lives ?

Isolate .. let the disease fizzle out .. disinfect mass transit and ultimately hospitals.

Or am I missing something ?

Well there is no way that 100% of the population can be isolated for even one day never mind 14.
Only takes one ...

Yes and there is of course private flights.

But I would have thought the majority of the infection could be halted .. if enough people isolated.

But I guess that's not going to happen ..

Interesting to see people climbing mountains during this epidemic .. I would have thought having less Oxygen would make you more prone to being ill.

When you end the isolation the people who contracted the virus at the start will be showing transmissible symptoms. Hence short term quarantine is a tool of last resort but not the answer. The key is to allow enough people to catch the virus so they can get back to work without overwhelming the NHS with critical patients. Hence why people on 6 figure salaries are in charge of this...

Maybe on day 1 of quarantine 1 member of the household may have it, might not pass on the virus for 3 days to 2nd family member, 3rd family member another 3 days later, 4th family member another day or two, 14 days becomes 21, and that's assuming any of them even had it on day one and that 14 days is all it takes for you to stop shedding virus.

it does beg the question, why let anyone in from any country that still has it as an ongoing problem?
.......because that's too much like common sense, and sadly, there seems to be precious little of that about nowadays.

We're under a lot of main long haul flightpaths here and although there's a vast reduction in the vapour trails, there are still long haul jets tooing and froing :(

You would have to shut everything down including hospitals for that to work.

Also say there are 5 people living in 1 house, none might have signs they are carrying the virus but are so to be sure you would have to lock them indoors 24/7 with no outside contact of any sort for at least 3 months.

That is ultimately what they are trying to do by telling people not to go out for anything that isnt really essential.
Obviously everybody can not be shut up for 2 weeks because the country would collapse.
If everybody listened and did nothing but home and work for 2 weeks cases would slow very quickly. Death is more unlikely if the NHS can treat you.

Yes, but that should be obvious to the family.

I guess there is the possibility that people are deliberately spreading the disease but I would have thought it common sense on how to deal with it.

I guess the whole family could have no symptoms though but be infected as per this scenario .. but even so it would reduce those able to spread the virus significantly.

The point I was making was that 14 days total lock down wouldn't work in all scenarios, will soon find out what boris plans for us now anyway!

If the virus can survive for 72hrs - or longer - away from a host, that would mean that many who isolated for 14days would come out and still be infectious for three days. If a household has it the infections could be staggered, someone who recovered could become re-infected etc. etc.

Unless it's to be for a very significant period, this is a holding exercise and no more. We are buying time to get the NHS as ready as it may be, and to lessen the initial peak of the infection curve so that when it hits, it finds the NHS more able to cope.
