for say £1500, put it into my neighbours herd and he kept the milk to cover it's costs, would I get any money back at the end of the year. Or would it be easier to ask how long is a piece of string??
If it dies, it dies. I know these things happen, just put it down to experience... and buy anotherWhat if it dies? Who are we blaming that on?
What do you want to achieve?for say £1500, put it into my neighbours herd and he kept the milk to cover it's costs, would I get any money back at the end of the year. Or would it be easier to ask how long is a piece of string??
Well, just an interest in some dairy cows really. I have sucklers at home, but dairy remains close to my heartWhat do you want to achieve?
It would be better to own a small percentage of the herd than an individual cow or cows

Or calve them and rear their heifers and so on?Buy heifer calfs, rear them, ai them to sexed semen and sell them as in calf heifers?

100% better option. That is the other option
You could be right, Maybe I'll shelve all plans until the UK is tb free. Won't be long I'm sure!TB is that much of a problem that you can still sell restricted stock. Just don't have any plans of calving them down though!

How can you plan to sell at £1500 then only get £800 and think that's ok ?The plan (admittedly by someone else) to buy calvea and rear on to I/C heifers is perfectly sound as I don't think you'll have any problem shifting them. Its just at what price? And you would want them gone the minute they're drawing udder so you don't get landed with them.
Thats all if you get TB by the way as well.
I know of loads of old dairy farmers doing it.

I guess it depends on where you live I see tb as more certainty than riskI was coming at it from the view of buying calves and rearing on to I/C and selling them before they calve at avg £1000. If he came down under TB then he could still shift them as I/C heifers but not at the £1000. TB is the risk of owning cattle.
