If it's not Orf, what is it?

Anyone any thoughts on what this is on this ewe?

Got about 5 with it but this one is by far the worst.

Thanks.

Has that sheep been eating out of an old wooden trough - it looks like the scarring is old but she has ripped it open again on someting.

Have any of her friends got the same?

Wild guess, necrotic dermatitis?

It looks like it. Caused by staphylococcal infections (mainly Staph aureus in the literature). I suspect some of these have orf virus involvement.

It depends how far you want to go. I'd like to take a couple of swabs to culture and do an antibiotic sensitivity - SA can have multiple antibiotic resistance (MRSA!!). Electron microscopy would show if there was any viral involvement, but we are dropping into academic interest rather than fixing your sheep now. If not responding to treatment then a biopsy may be needed.

Mine got staph aureus in orf infections last year. Alamycin did not work, had to get something else from vet which did. Purple spray made mine worse, causing swelling which confused things early on. (I can't see how to search for threads I started or I'd post the link for the photos). Also hurts so pain killer a good idea.

To be followed by diagnosis of ' inconclusive'

Only joking!
