If you think the UK is not in a good position to negotiate leaving, it's position is much worse to negotiate staying.
It may seem paradoxical but the harder the brexit, the better the relationship will be with the EU. A soft fudge of a brexit will cause endless grief.
And to try to answer the OP, the powers that be seem hell bent on going harder to prevent any softening of the EU, contrary to probably a majority of its populace.

UK won’t be staying. That can’t happen. But it looks more and more like it will be in permanent orbit around planet EU, under effective influence of if not total control by EU regulations and probably paying a handsome sub for the pleasure thereof.
Mogg will call it a vassal state. The Tory party will continue to convulse itself in a never ending bitchfest over Europe. UKRAP will never again see the light of day.
Oh, JC ...... hail to the new PM.

I agree that it is a definite possibility.
This is because I, like many others were wrong in thinking that Brexit should be decided together. It should have been left to those from the leave campaign.

Please please Mr. EU, can our boys tag along with your new EU army? (Best be inside the tent after all to what the Frogs and Jerries are getting up to:scratchhead::scratchhead:)

Looks like we might have to have another vote to tell them we actually want to leave the EU and it's apparatus, rather than trying to fudge it so all the problems go away.
