I wouldnt be living entirely off the rented 200 acre would i, might only make 5k profit on it after rent[/QUOTE]
But you would have decided that it was viable for you to work at that risk threshold otherwise what would be the point of doing it ?

£5000÷200acres= £25 ÷ 3 tonnes = £8.33 drop per ton would mean break even before even thinking about extra fixed costs - hope you value the straw ,your time and never breakdown . Would you put any value on risking the timeliness on your existing business margins ?

Theoretically if you could rent another 200 acres near your main farm at £50/acre (arable ground) would you?? And what would you do with it?? No sfp included

It depends on the time frame. For 3yrs, it'd have to be convenient, for 5+, I'd definitely have a go. Farm it the same as the rest of this farm, as if I'm going to live forever.

Two cereals, break, two cereals, different break, two cereals, different break, and back to the begining.

If it's £50 an acre land, it might only keep 10 cows.:(

And you can bet 1 of those would be drowned in the river or upside down in the marsh by the end of year 1.

Or you would try to cut the first headland in the first field and smash your mower bed to bits on a load of old pig iron someone had parked in the grass since 1904.

Or you would rent the entire 200 acres for 10K and then need to spend 5000 quid trying to kill out the rushes!
