If you tell lies you'll get caught out eventually

Would there not have been some official protocols the semen would have to go through before it could be offered for sale. I know nothing about semen importation but I find it strange that a random can offer semen for sale without the paperwork to back it up.
There are, but it regularly gets smuggled and often it's transported in a receptacle that's non too sophisticated.
Plenty of home collected bulls end up in a lot of places that aren't home.

No. There is no EHC in place for ovine semen or embryos from the uk into China. That means that there is no way it can be done (legitimately) as there is just no agreed framework in place to dictate what health testing, etc would be needed. It’s not a case of not being able to meet them, they have not been discussed between govts.
Thanks to the shambles that is Brexit, we haven’t been able to export breeding sheep to the EU, or even through it, as there are no control points over the channel yet. Even if there was an ovine EHC between EU and China, we couldn’t get anything to the EU either.

His answer would have been to buy some semen here, put into his shipper, then disappear it into a shipping container full of something I suppose. I would be selling it in good faith, but he obviously wasn’t too concerned about any regs.🤐
The last bulls bought by the Chinese went to Italy via ROI.

probably happens more than we know, wouldnt take much effort to get stuff on the ferry in a flask

Not declaring an explosive substance on a ferry is more heavy frowned upon than transporting the semen is.

Is liquid Nitrogen explosive now? I always thought it would be good at quelling fires…
It’s ok to travel with such flasks as long as the contents have the appropriate paperwork, as the sheep AI teams do when travelling to and from Ireland every year.

I can legally sell ram semen to anyone on the doorstep with a flask. He would be the one breaking any law, if he chose to export that UK spec semen….. as may well be the case with the Jacot semen brought in?

But yes, I would rather there was an EHC in place to allow the trade in genetics to go on without barriers.

It always has been, it's like any boiling liquid, it risks explosion.
Maybe you should fill a sealed container with it and sit beside it, report back if it's explosive or not. 😉

You can't just rock up to a ferry with liquid N, you must declare it and have appropriate paperwork, vehicle, licence and a tested tank regardless of if the tank has semen in it or not, the semen is a totally different set of paperwork as it's export licence applicable

I know youd be within the law, just my poor attempt at a joke!

I’ll bow to your better judgement, but I’ve never seen an AI flask that was fully sealed. They are vented, which is why they need to be topped up regularly.
Exports take place in tanks that are near identical to the on-farm flasks many have on dairy farms, and those riding round in the back of AI technician’s vans/cars. I’ve never heard of one exploding yet.;)

No, they are vented to avoid explosion, they are regularly topped up because the N is sitting at around boiling point and is constantly vaporising.

You are right, the tanks will be pretty much the same, although many export tanks will be whats known as dry shippers, but they must be tested to make sure they do vent if travelling by ship or plane.

When was the last time you heard of a gas cylinder exploding, but it's still wise to have them regulated.

Technicians shouldn't be using cars, tanks should be kept in a separate compartment to those travelling in the vehicle.
