If you want glyphosate sprayed on the crops you eat.....ban glyphosate

Too logical.

Imho the consumer has a different atttiude to something "sprayed on a crop" vs "stubble cleaning".

We would not be at this juncture if logic and science ruled over emotion !
We would not be in this position if Round UP was made by anyone else and not used on Round UP Ready crops

How so?? The residues are well established. And the majority of crop does not see the end user for months after harvest, and much of when it does, is only as livestock feed anyway?

It's long been said that it isn't a scientific argument ,,,,, and sooner or later a ban was going to happen ,,,,, personally I would of preferred to see a ban on the liquid sunshine side of it if that kept the far more important stale seed bed side of glypho

The green lobby is not interested in how/why you use the product. It does not matter a jot. As far as they are concerned, it is a product invented by Monsanto, used worldwide in large amounts. They do not understand why it is used or how, they just want it gone. They want European agriculture to be that kind of thing you see in a museum.

What we won't know it seems is if we could of bought ourselves a few more years if we had done something sooner ,,,,, maybe that might of brought a ban on quicker , who knows ????

But it seems that the French farmers have woken up to the fact of what's happening and let's hope they do what they do well !!!!! And I hope we might all join them

The entire process of growing corn to make ethanol is even more madness.

Indeed but that is politics.

I used to be a serious advocate of biofuels and AD and the like, now I am a bit more circumspect with it. I assumed that more feed grains or biomass entering the fuel production pipeline would aid farmers with reduced supplies ending up sloshing around the world markets. The energy side of it, well, if you look closely at a lot of agriculture we should not be doing a lot of it. Europe, in particular has no real business growing oilseeds or sugarbeet whatsoever...

We grow oilseeds & sugar because of the risk of supply shocks. It goes back to wartime shortages. If you lift all restrictions and protectionism there would be very little food grown in Britain. It's ultimately politics that will see glyphosate banned.

Possibly best not to mention residue levels to the public, does not make for good reading https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa...7/pesticide-residues-quarter4-2016-report.pdf

taken from that link. (not glyphosate) but is simply did a very quick search for residue levels on .gov sites.

Organic sample with residue of chlormequat The Secretariat has written to the supplier of the sample of organic porridge oats with a residue of chlormequat which is not permitted in organic food production. Defra's Organic Farming branch and the organic certification organisation were also informed. Further investigation: suspected illegal use We have passed details of 3 samples of wheat based cereals from the UK that contained a residue of chlorpropham which is not approved for use on wheat in the UK to HSE. HSE is investigating; brand name details will not be published until the investigations are complete.

Lots of similar results, just a click away.

The fact roundup is used pre-harvest is utterly immaterial. These green groups want the stuff banned, it's as simple as that.

Sorry 100% disagree with this.
I agree the greens want it banned at all cost but common sense should tell everyone that it should not be used pre harvest!!!
Farming should take head out of the sand and stop using it pre harvest volentarily before it gets a blanket ban.
I for one would rather eat bread, drink beer/whisky that has not been tickled with the sunpencil 10 days pre combine & I'm sure a high % of the general public would also.
REGARDLESS OF EUROPE / POLITICS / BIG BUSINESS ETC CONSUMERS WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE THEIR SAY.... so as I say, best act voluntarily.....

Excuse me but common sense doesn’t have any place in the pesticides regulation threads on here. Minimizing pesticide use is in farmers best interest but there are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

would it extend the harvest season so we had more time to bale straw without it . used to be a Months Holiday between barley and wheat . what happened
We used to plant our winter barley by mid September ( in the days before BG) it was a foot high by Christmas and it was cut by mid July at the latest, OSR last week in July and wheat first week in August, with the beans coming in at August bank holiday. Now it's all gone to pot due to changes in our weather patterns so now the whole lot comes together in one soggy mess at the end of August....! 30 years ago we would have perhaps used a bit of diquat on the rape but that was about it.We are lacking sunshine at the critical times of the year.

On what grounds should we stop using it?there is no proven link for anything bad with glyphosate the same cannot be said about tobacco and alcohol and many other things that we put inside our bodies but it doesn't stop people from doing it.Don't be so naive to think a voluntary ban would stop them all it would mean to them is the farmers must think there is a problem with glyphosate or they would not of stopped using it so we better go for a blanket ban

I'm just surprised (nae astonished) that brewery / distillery & food buyers haven't put a blanket ban on buying crops that are pre harvest glyphosated already.
If I were a distillery I certainly would stop buying as if a link is ever proven then 10+ years of distilling could be down the drain! .... even if the chances of carry over into the finished product were not proven the damage could still be done.
--
Tobacco/alcohol etc is a totally different argument....
People have the right to expect that anything they buy is as chemical free as possible and treating wheat with glyphosate 10days pre combine is complete madness
MODERN FARMING DOES NOT NEED TO PRE HARVEST ROUNDUP AND IF FARMING IN GENERAL CONTINUES DOWN THE ROUTE OF USING PRE HARVEST APPLICATION THEN ITS ONE MASSIVE TARGET ON THE BACK.
--
Collectively farmers, NFU, merchants etc need a wholescale change of attitude on this- very shortly we will be out of Euro umbrella and if one certain gentleman or lady! in gov U.K. doesn't like roundup overuse use it could mean a blanket ban.
Approved use on stubble would be far more palletable than an outright ban.
Once it's banned it won't be reversed and that would be interesting....

Put this another way....
put two breads side by side at the entrance into m&s / Waitrose / Tesco / Asda etc
Both look the same, both the same price, both with same signs against them....
Bread A says....
bread made from U.K. wheat, last chemical application 8 weeks pre crop harvest.
Bread B says....
bread made from U.K wheat that been grown as per bread A but wheat was additionally sprayed with roundup/glyphosate 1 week to 10days pre harvest
--
..... I'm pretty confident that there would be a clear sales winner at the end of the day.
Consumer has the right to know everything about product...
Consumer/buyer is king....

What was it sprayed with 8 weeks ago?why only name the one chemical that was used and I bet if the same trail was set up with no names of the products used there would be no difference
