hi have an older type ifor williams ta510g stock trailer needing the brakes done ie new shoes and cables
it is missing the brake backplates and there seem to be loads of different types for these trailers
it has a bradley hydratow hu12 hitch
do the brakes have to be made by bradley or are other types compatible?

theres a plate on the chassis ta510g, havent seen anything on the axle, its a bradley hitch and its old so not sure if its compatible with the modern stuff dont want the hassle of ordering bits and they wont work

have figured out which brakes i have, its alko brakes they were used on pre 1992 trailers so my trailer is pretty old, there are alko brake backplates available but they need to be welded on, never seen this done before, there are knott backplates that can be bolted on will they work with my tow hitch, pretty sure all the tow hitches do the same thing which is move the brake rod?

I have one of the older 8×4 trailers, looked into sorting the brakes out too, after pricing the parts I need cables and all that as well,it is just as cheap too buy complete new axles with everything on them, price them and you will see better off buying new axles and easy too fit.

Hu12 hitch rings a bell, mine was on a pre 1982 trailer, the coupling was badly worn, hard to tell by the noise a typical IW trailer makes down the road. I bought a "direct modern replacement" from ebay which of course did not fit the chassis. My local trailer centre made up an adaptor plate and then replaced most of the Alko fittings. Having spent weeks the previous year doing a similar job on an even older trailer the previous year and having to get parts made up, I willingly paid up for them to do the job. Brake parts seem to be like hurdles, they all do the same job, are the same size, yet have subtle differences so you can't mix them.

ok i have seen axles for sale and they seem to work out just as cheap as buying the backplates, also seen stubaxles for sale which are even cheaper and easier to post to where i stay, if i buy any would i be better in getting the more modern knott type of brakes and a new knott hitch, it seems never ending fixing brakes and lights on these trailers but theres a hefty fine if you are pulled by the law or have an accident
