Ifor Williams trailer problem

Hi just wondering if anyone can help. Got an Ifor Williams trailer here and after driving for about 5 minutes the wheels start to become tighter and tighter also the hubs get extremely hot. I went for a couple of mile drive got back jacked it up and could hardly turn the wheels. As soon as I apply the trailer handbrake then release it all 4 wheels are back free and moving. Any advice would be appreciated.

If the cables are free then maybe damper gone in the hitch? Any time you slow at all the trailer could be pushing on its brakes

Cables all seem to be totally free. That was the first thing I checked

Brakes adjusted up too tight? Rubbing a bit much and heating up as you go getting tighter?

I would say the brake shoes have perished and come away from steel holders and wedged in drum , had it happen .

Not sure, came to ask for advice before I start wasting my time trying different things. Will look into that!

I disconnected main cable and tied it out the way and went for a drive just to make sure it wasn’t just something in drum getting hot and swelling but nothing happened atall so got to have something to do with the brakes

That would suggest that the hitch is putting undue tension on the cable then, so as suggested maybe the damper is goosed

Yes all 4 wheels are the same

That would suggest that the hitch is putting undue tension on the cable then, so as suggested maybe the damper is goosed

So maybe start by replacing that, thanks

If your cables appear to be free then take a wheel off, remove a drum & have a look, the continual heating up will damage your wheel bearings if it hasn't already.
Something is definitely not right.
Let us know once you have had a look in there

The trailer is at my yard and not able to get there till tomorrow so was just acknowledging the advice given. Thanks for letting me know

Whilst you're taking the drums off ,treat it to new brake shoes
Check the bearing ,presume it's a one piece and not a taper .
