Where replacing the piston & liners in a D246. I used to have a workshop manual 30 years ago but can't find it any longer. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the liner protrusion measurement should be?
Also, I seem to remember a big section in the maunal about timing the balancer in the sump. Are there timing marks on the gears somewhere?

I think II & T do a manual for international- I know I certainly used one years ago although I can't remember seeing any of the stand proud measurements in there. You're correct about timing the balancer, again that's in the book but from memory it was something along the lines of setting the timing marks on the pulley with no1 piston at TDC, the balancer itself would then pretty much set itself (the weights hang down, assuming engine is the right way up) and could be bolted on. As I said, this is from memory and was 20+ years ago so it's def worth checking. Sorry can't be more help

Ok, just downloaded a PDF of the original I remember from https://oldermanuals.com/

This is the image that has been imprinted in my mind from 30 years ago!
Happy now.

When you come to time the balancer the marks on the crank gear are usually very clear, sadly the dot mark in the balancer gear us usually more of a black smudge.

No such thing as protrusion on liners in these German built engines, make sure where liner sits into block is mint clean, before fitting liners get a mirror and inspect the cavity where the liner seals fit and make sure there is no corrosion . Get no 2 piston to tdc and spot the dot punch marks on the crankshaft, the balancer will be setup into block with 2 rotors slightly off set, mark the dot on the balancer with a bit of tippex!

That was an add lib comment as with over 700 of these engines rebuilt spanning 45 years not once have we had to use shims to alter liner height, yes I have all the factory engine manuals too

I've rebuilt a few myself back in the day but would all have been with genuine liners. I'm yet to see how the spuriouse offerings of today measure up so must be worth being aware of and checking.
