So you going to wear a mask forever I take it?
I mean if it's the courteous thing to do, why not?
I thought they a misguided and counterproductive attempt to control a respiratory virus.
Down to 5%masks in Tesco(sample size 200) guess everyone being rude in Essex.
Imo masks spread unnecessary fear and it is a discourtesy to wear them.
Provocative. I have spent a lot of my working life passing through an awful lot of airports and was always struck by the site of visitors from Japan wearing face masks. Did it make me scared? No. But maybe I'm made of sterner stuff than you. I took it as a courtesy to others to try and avoid, not eliminate but avoid, the risk of spreading colds, flu, coughs etc. Hence my earlier comment about putting a hand in front of your face when you cough or sneeze. Don't know whether you are right about people in Essex - I guess you'll have a better-informed opinion than me

Covid seems to have made an awful lot of new scientists, who with no training or scientific background, pontificate in the most certain terms about matters of life and death.
The rest of us normal plebs, on the other hand look to the scientific community for advice and guidance, on how to behave, protect ourselves and protect others.
I for one, am glad the scientists and epidemiologists, stood up in this pandemic, and delivered new ground breaking drugs, and statistical based advice, to help us through the crisis.
Essexman and his cohort, can continue to bang empty pots and vessels, safe in the knowledge the actions of scientists and most average Joe Citizen, has done a lot to control this virus, and make life safer for the self same pot bangers….

One thing I have noticed is a lot of people are very keen to get the Covid jab and yell at anyone that doesn't, but ask them if they get a flu jab and they say no.
Seems odd.

You misunderstood...The fear the masks spread is to the other people still in masks who are still needlessly afraid.
In your example you weren't wearing a mask and had no reason to fear.
There are lots of people wearing them from needless fear and those are the ones who are being harmed by courtesy wearing of masks.

It is.
Went out and got my first ever flu jab this week, fair queue at the pharmacy doing the same.
Hopefully due a covid booster in early Nov, waiting the call.

I may well be missing your point, but I think not hence this reply. My observation of many (often Japanese) visitors wearing masks - often in the company of others in their party without mask - did not make me scared though I would always be nervous of picking up some bug in heavily trafficked areas like airports. It did inspire my respect for their courtesy. And I had even though that perhaps I should do the same if I were ever to have to travel in confined spaces when suffering from a cough or cold.

I also don't understand where the 'needless fear' comes from. I still believe that wearing a mask at the very least limits the spread of airborne bugs. And I am still in a mask and will also be shortly when I fly in a plane full of other people with masks.

And finally, do I care whether my wearing a mask frightens others? Absolutely not.

How very courteous of you!
Still missing the point, it's NOT the people without masks on you are scaring, it's the ones wearing them through needless fear, fear that you reinforce with your "courtesy"

You are a staunch - 'I wont ever EVER wear a mask ' person , I think you are coming from a very weak stance of arguement !
Just let the ones who want to wear one get on with it ,rather than you point a finger and go on about it ,just because it makes you mad

So let me get this straight; by wearing a mask (regardless of my reasons) I am scaring other people who are driven to wear them because they are scared. And who, other than a man from Essex, is saying it is needless. (Oh the list is long, but not especially impressive - second rate actors included)

Correct, you got there in the end.
It's decades of research, Boris, the CMO, Vallance, whitty, Hancock, plenty of video of them all saying correctly that mandatory masking is a waste of time and likely to be counterproductive. So the list is long

D'you mean the people saying it are the same Johnson (luckily I don't know him to use his first name), Whitty, Hancock etc. who were saying 'Hands, Face, Space'?)

Good for you that you were so many decades ahead of the curve .

If you say you wearing out of courtesy then the clear implication is that is discourteous to not wear one.
Would you consider that I have been left alone to not wear a mask over the last 18months?

Of course there is an element of fear, just as there is for going to the dentist or taking the car for its MOT. I suspect you brush your teeth and top up the oil in the car though, so you take sensible precautions.

I was taught how to wear a mask when I went through nursing training. It was a vital part of the equipment. We even double masked at times, especially when barrier nursing a burns victim. They work if you wear them correctly. We did not catch the diseases we were nursing, and the patient did not catch anything from us, It is not just courtsey, it is common sense not to deliberately put yourself in harms way, especially as you do not know any underlying health problems of those you may come in contact with.

I can fully understand how fed up we all are with all this, but we will not come out of it until people start caring about others around them.
