thinking to buy one for putting under ground road crossings in for the umbilical slurry system, saving lugging ramps about and having townies getting stuck on them, what's to know about them where might we find second hand ones? Rough prices?

You will also need to be streetworks certified to excavate under roads and within the verge space unless you are going more than 2m deep and we'll away from the road.

We have all the accreditation to carry out the works but still use a contractor to do the moling itself.

Not good when the mole stops under the road.

Also never do the work withought full utility searches and paper trail to prove it!

Certificate?? Depends how wide the road is, and whats the subsoil. Strong, long steel pipe, point on the end, dig a hole in the field either side of the road, aim the pipe, and whack through with the excavator, , then cut the point offand push the plastic pipe through.

A mole will struggle to pull a 100mm pipe over any distance. You would be wanting a directional drill contractor to pull through 180mm PE pipe with stub flanges either end. Just bolt on your Bauer fitting and away you go. Pressure rating of 16 bar!!

We are out in the sticks but there are fibre optic cables both sides of the road , also an electric cable and a phone line, and at one point a 3ft diameter gas main..... So hit anything like that with your pipe and you'll be in deep sh!t if not dead....

Yes to excavate in the verges, road or under the road you need streetworks supervisor and operative.

It's never worth the risk of jfdi as utility companies don't take kindly to strikes!

Ok thanks, there seems to be a lack of people to mole pipe around this way, ideally want a 6 inch pipe then we can thread our pipe through it. They are all minor roads with only water services to worry about at worst on a few roads.

As said above, get a directional drilling contractor. We had 2 done last year, so quick and a reasonable bill imo.

There is no way you could mole a 6 inch pipe without some major machinery.

Just dig the trench - you only need to do it once.

If you know the right people, anything is possible. Western Power did something similiar here putting a 3ph duct in for a supply. Multinational paying the bill. They're also planning to do similar underneath a railway line too - will be interesting to see! Another major project.

I also have a contractor coming to visit me later this week to discuss doing something on a much much smaller scale (12m!) so that will prove an interesting visit. Their charges can often be cheaper than digging and reinstating....I'm sure they can make good money from it. The biggest cost is probably insurance!
