Is it legal to import seed from other EU countries ?

if so is there a process to follow ?

I have a feeling we have had German and French grown OSR seed here in the past but not sure ?

You grow Montana... which is German?

I presume you must purchase through a seed merchant in the same way that you require them when transferring/purchasing seed between farming businesses.

Mostly grown from ffs but yes I was fairly sure that a lot of seed is imported

How hard to do that yourself is that though ?

i have imported seed from germany and nz.
saten union were relatively easy to deal with in germany, nz were very easy, but the rules on nz imports got too tight to bother with it.
simplest way is get it posted.

So can lots of people .... but at what price ?
The EU standards are not the same as the uk, lower generally, higher levels of impurities, If you want to sow herbicide resistant ryegrass for example go for the cheap stuff, if not stick with merchants with a life time of experience sourcing clean quality seed,

Yet it seems from above posts that a lot of seed supplied is already coming from the EU ?

Sounds like scaremongering to me ! are you per chance a merchant ?

No i am a farmer, nothing to gain by"scaremongering" Years ago i helped build a seed cleaning plant and did quite a bit of seed sampling,of both uk and imported seed,Where i farm now is a major seed producing area for the whole of europe,
so please dont judge me by your standards

He's right regarding the 'Higher Voluntary Standards' for UK seed. It has stricter tolerances the than EU standards regarding admix and other seeds. Some merchants used to have even higher standards but whether these are worth paying for his entirely up to you
