Importing cattle

Our dairy phoned up asking if we had imported any dairy cows that were in milk within 3 months of arrival in UK. Something to do with Defra seeking some views. Anyone know anything?

I made the point that when we did import 6 years ago, it was only because of a substantial TB breakdown (so policy within UK Govt control) and because the health status of some countries superior to our own eg Denmark BVD, lepto and TB free. I also pointed out that importing as we did - in-calf heifers 2 months off calving - enabled us to test for neospora prior to import, so again, protecting herd health. Can't get an accurate blood test much earlier than 2 months prior.

It wasn't a very clear line but because he was asking about milk being sold within 3 months of import I got the impression it wasn't about a total ban. But those buying in milkers rather than in-calf heifers would be hit hard.

I was told that all the producers he had spoken to had said they only sourced from Europe because of herd herd health (in most cases wanting to ensure TB free and in most cases to replace TB losses, a lot of farms are suffering locally).

It was Defra he was responding to, not RT.

Apparently it has something to do with Europe. There is a rule which has been put back to jan 1st that states that all imported cattle should be on farm 3 months before the milk can go in the tank.
dairy’s that’s cannot prove this is the case will Not be allowed to export any products that don’t meet the criteria.
now before a major panic breaks out I have heard Europe doesn’t want a fight over this so has already delayed its implementation to January and is already Looking to either exclude European cattle from this rule or cattle from all countries that import into the EU.
so hopefully nothing to see here.

Sounds like something to do with farm assurence..cattle have to be on farm 90days before the meat is farm assured…so I’m guessing the same is coming for the milk
