Just spent over an hour doing a fifty hour grease on a 4220 Fastrac with front linkage and pto. Still have not got grease in one UJ on front pto drive shaft, despite half an hour and OHs help cranking engine.

What other grease nipples drive you to distraction, and you walk away saying 'who the .... designed this'?

Some early Japanese pickups had impossible greasers on the prop shafts, until we discovered the grease gun extension end device, that was provided in the spare wheel tool kit. I expect they are all sealed bearings now.

  3. got to Grease your prop shaft, I was once coming up the A15 one Saturday night passed RAF Scampton about midnight, Shaft UJ went, within a couple of seconds, it flailed about battering the hyd tank and knocked a hole in it, at same time it knocked an air tank off, and brakes came on stopping it dead, and the heat off the yoke ignited the hyd oil, and bust into flames, I got out and was trying to put the fire out with a jacket to smother the flames while the bus driver following me was pulling me out from under the JCB by the feet, fire brigade came and put it out, had to lie under the pee wet through thing the screw the spring brakes off to get it towed off the road, funnily enough it was a bloody hard to get to grease nipple, and did get missed more than it should of, if only the nipple was in 1 of the caps, it might of been done more often

There’s one nipple on our new manitou on the headstock that I cannot for the life of me get to. Have tried every possible angle and it’s always just coming out the side rather than going in. Can’t get the gun to seat on it right.

There's generally 2 that are difficult on 2170, the one under cab beside diesel tank, and the one on handbrake assembly. Need to lye underneath it with light and get somebody to shunt about till it lines up. Not very health and safety friendly.

Somedays you get really lucky and they're all pointing in right direction.

I thought that grease nipple was a 500hr one? But I could be wrong. I agree, it’s not easy.

Can you not turn front pto drive shaft by hand? On our 2170 you can turn rear pto driveshaft by hand making it easy to line up.

  8. The front end of the steering ram on our JCB TM220 is a pain due to the multiple hydraulic hoses in that area.
Today we got even and fitted a remote greaser pipe. Many thanks to Scot JCB who made up what actually works rather than what I asked for!

  9. I use needle 90 degree needle points and 90 degree clip on adpators for hard to get to grease nipples.

Grease nipples on the prop shaft of a Merlo 32.6 are near impossible to get at.
When being dry means they need replacing:whistle:, they’ll have nipples on the end caps.

I was told those gripples are there for the factory and shouldn’t be greased. But once greased, you have to keep greasing them.

None of ours have ever been greased there before, and never had a failure in 10,000s of hours.

I was told the same, but only after the rep had handed me the special adapter tool and we’d greased the machine several times! :banghead:
That was on a 59plate 535-95. It was awkward, but possible to do all the nipples once you had the knack. I did however break one off once in the process! :eek:That was an adventure, and required some thinking outside the box to remove and replace it!

2 on a topper pto shaft here, they are on the inside of the universal so you have to dismantle the guard every time to get at it. :banghead:

In the book it says 50, on the plastic panel it says 500. The machine is new to me so I wanted to get it done anyway.

Its permanently attached to the front of the engine crank. Clutch I assume is in the gearbox on the front.

I've never heard of a grease nipple that shouldn't be greased before, everyday we learn .........
Why didn't they grease them and but blanks in, then so?

Frequently talk to myself when greasing shafts, only do a few hard nipples at a time and go back.
