"Improving Our Lot" - Planned Holistic Grazing, for starters..

Anyone used sorgham Sudan grass as a cover crop? I've got about half an acre of awful land from where an old slurry pit was filled in and have been thinking how to improve it. I like the amount of root and above ground matter that this plant has and I would be putting it straight back in the floor. However this is grass land and I've read that it's toxic to cattle? So would I need to completely remove it before reintroducing the cows? If that's the case, maybe mustard would be better... Btw I can't get on the land to plant anything until spring, but it could wait until next year for the trial. Thanks in advance.

Indeed.
3 hours they were here for that 30 second appearance 😆
Edited out all the stuff about how the pastured system works, daily moves, following the cattle, soil improvement, etc🙄
Shame they edited all that out :cautious:
But you did come across well and it was very anti soya, pro grass, people need to pay more for better food and stop exporting their food problems so well done (y)
Liked the exlana cap too

I'll be expecting payment from @Tim W 🤣
In, truth it was the only clean one I could lay my hands on😃

Yes, wasn't too disappointed with the overall slant of their piece. Wasn't a general meat bashing thing, and seemed to highlight it's consumer "pound in your pocket" that drives this.
Was a bit concerned what I was getting involved in!

On the plus side, Tom Clarke, the science editor who did the piece, said he was keen to come back and do a more general piece on regenerative farming 🙂
When I said to him "I genuinely believe the anti meat drive will be detrimental to the battle against climate change" he said "ooh, I wish you'd say that on camera!"

Oooh. Controversial statement. Stepping out from the received wisdom. I think you better start to get your one liner sound bites ready for his return
Well done! You've sown the seeds with him 👍

to some people, whatever you say, they are so blinkered, they wouldn't believe it. Know quite a few vegies, that are 'normal', and don't push their views, but vegans seem to think it's their job, to convince the world to stop eating meat.
There are probably vegans that don't push their agenda as well. I don't know any vegans though. I've only knowingly met one and she was my wife's aunt at another family members birthday party. (She lives 150 odd miles away not likely to ever meet her again) mother in law introduced me to her and she refused to talk to me.
Suited me fine I didn't really want to talk to her anyway :LOL:
Another family member on wife's side is a vegetarian and she got a bit pushy with me a couple of times. She's given up now because I can argue (calmly!) rings round her and make her look stupid (y)

we are being harassed by a vegan lady, from our experiences, i'd quite happily shoot the lot, but that isn't either PC or legal, perhaps i ought to go for breaking a few bones, much easier, and as takes longer to mend, could slow them down a bit.

Just catching up with some back issues of the 'Scottish Farmer' on my coffee break. There does appear to be a push towards soil health, carbon sequestration etc happening just now propelled by the 'Farming for 1.5 degrees' campaign and the Scottish government's carbon neutral in 2045 target. I'm hoping all of this will aid my grant application for 50% off a cattle crush, as I was sure to press those buttons in the application (y)
