"Improving Our Lot" - Planned Holistic Grazing, for starters..

Some good points there. Thanks team.

My main concern is that the ten yearling calves may be a bit grizzly around afterbirths and lambs until they get used to the new situation, so I'll probably "wean them through the gate" this week by taking their mums out and putting them next door

But, ten calves in the lambers is less than 40 calves and they're already used to being with the sheep

the grazing calves are a bit flightier than our ones and I feel a few extra adults may help settle them a bit, as well as teach them the rest of the ranch - they've only been on the same 12ha or so since they arrived and won't know where the gateways are.

The big benefit is that all the sheep fences can then go to where the sheep are instead of being used for lane fences, and all the single-wire stuff can be used for cell-grazing the cattle in smaller paddocks, which will ease the pressure over lambing

might - just might have found me some cows... dairy heifers - but they might be over wintering with me... and i dont think theres many ... came up in one of those farmer convos where you try and work out if its a real option or daydreaming or your signing up to 60... So may be coming in with lots of questions..

picked up a nz romney ram to run as terminal/ bflock/maybe permanany cross flock - clearly running straight into the wool is good direction rather than no wool.
ogh and very disgruntled that i missed the date for registering ped lleyn rams in feb due to covid... so unregistered wonderboys will be ..i dunno worked possibly or released in a ram sale.

Just phone them and say it was missed due to Covid. It seems to be a catch-all excuse for every cock up and bit of shoddy service at the moment!

Absolutely. The world actually functioned better during The Great Wars than it does right now, you'd be led to believe that nobody died last year.

It's an opportunity that has never really existed before, because we're actually allowing one-another a little bit of slack

It’s a bit of a joke at the moment. Tried to open up a new business account. Apparently they aren’t taking on new customers at the moment because of Covid. WTF? It’s like they don’t want our money!!

lots of suppliers/dealers/whatever have been like that for years. they will have to change though or go bust, if we are not going to be given money we can't spend it, make note of all those that didn't want your business/couldn't be bothered remember them for later when they can't pick and choose, also make note of the ones that went out of their way for you

Apparently they haven't been opening business accounts due to fraud with the covid loans etc.
Quite how we're supposed to carry on in meantime?

Seriously though, that is more than a bit of a bugger.

Absolutely nothing has changed.
I guess one thing that has "changed" is that our banks are slowly recouping what the aussie droughts etc have cost Australasia as a whole (our banks are largely Aus. owned, is the thing) which has changed the risk profile of rural lending to a certain extent.
I did good though, I didn't dip into "the money" and the farm paid it all by itself, the big thing now is that our working capital is pretty much nonexistent and "as luck would have it" we still have enough cashflow to pay our mortgage and bills etc.

What it may mean in the short term is that it's us, who carry the cost of bought-in calves and CMR etc.

Second bump was our little prem calf didn't make it, the weather and being runty kinda sealed the deal on her. But Silver'll soon take a calf I'd say, she doesn't have a lot of say in it!

Err, I haven’t posted here for a while as I feel a bit like an imposter, seeing as how I don’t have any livestock or do any grazing
Anyhoo, I thought some might be interested in this ( very short notice I know ), but a free online lecture from Allan Savory, live in an hours time.
He was coming out here to deliver this in person, but covid bûggered those plans

You're still basing your decisions on HM principles though.
No need to let the details get in the way, fella, the big picture is you're one of us
