There is a saying here that farms only last for 4 generations
The 1st settle it
The 2nd consolidate it
The 3rd is when the rot sets in
The 4th are the ones who lose it
Well I am at least 5th so wtf am I I spose to do ?
I interestingly as far as we can make out it was rented then owned then rented then owned then rented then owned and is now rented again

Well I'm the 4th here and I'd say the rot already has started with my dad. (Not his fault just bad luck and poor decisions from other family members and some bad advice)
I sure as sh!t am not going to lose it though!

The equivalent here is "Rags to rags in 3 generations"

1 slogs to get it
Next rests on the laurels of the first
Next is a waster and fritters it away.

Often see it happen!

as always, the way into farming is hard work, dedication/determination, and having the luck, to be in the right place, at the right time ! or winning the lottery.
Create a lottery for yourself: save your butt off when you're young enough to have minimal recurring costs
invest it wisely, but don't trust your wisdom of youth ie spread it around, and keep trying to get it to grow by shifting it around when you spot new things, don't be sentimental with it.
Get to know people who can give you a hand for a hand, so you can save more money, even if it means you have a tame life when your mates are out setting fire to theirs.

That's the hard bit about wealth creation , the alternatives are so nice and so attractive that the world passes 90% of the wealthy population by to a fair extent, all they do is work to put someone else ahead.

The best decision I ever made was to stay home as long as possible and worked hard for my keep, so I didn't have to spend my pay on accomodation and living costs.
My Mum hasn't vacuumed her house since I was 11 because I have done it since then, there is always time to do what needs to be done.

I don't do half-pie relationships

I think we are going to have quite a drawn-out lambing, some imminent and some quite late. Ah well. If you mix 3 totally different lines together and put rams with them, it's what you get. 290 left to lamb.

still only got very short grass, but hopefully it will be off very soon. Soil temp is on the climb after a couple of warm days and northerly winds, probably growing about 20kgDM/ha a day or so
Still a few humps of peastraw sitting there for them to kick about

How are you getting on with the PensAgro pogo?

They still aren't here - I think they are in catch-up mode. I don't really mind because I like shifting them, best part of the day is shifting time IMO.
But, working from 7-7 means I only see them once a day in much daylight so I could probably still make use of the timer pogo

I often see ryegrass tillers with 4 or more leaves, maybe on a 5-leaf tiller it will be beginning to drop the bottom leaf. Cocksfoot/orchardgrass I often see with 7 good leaves, which is why I'd plant it ahead of a ryegrass.

Nevers Seen one with Seven good leaves. Me thinks thérè is still work to do on thé health of my pastures.

Not necessarily the number of leaves, but the amount of growing leaf area is really what is going to aid your energy cycle the most?
I can also see in my pastures, tiny little "beaten up" tillers with a heap of tiny leaves - would much rather a 3 leaf plant to my knee than a 6 leaf plant that I can fit under my heel.

I hope to regenerate the plants, rather than simply maintain/preserve what is there; by giving it all a good reset via disturbance, and time for new plants to replace the old ones - get some vigour back into these abused pastures.

They're too far gone for production, but they can still lend their seed to the land this summer, looking longer term. I've been looking too close in front.
