Incompatibility between Banjo and ARAG / Snaplock fittings

Just in the middle of sorting fittings for a Honda / Pacer pump to pump liquid fertiliser into our sprayer. Existing couplings on the sprayer are ARAG fittings. I have bought some Banjo male NPT to male camlock fittings, but these do not seem to fit onto a female ARAG camlock. I thought all camlock types were meant to be compatible, but it seems as if they are not, or am I missing some trick?

There is camlok and hiplok, they are slightly different. Wish we just had the one standard.

Who uses which?

I agree. It's been so much more complicated that I was expecting for what should be a very simple bit of pipework. Turned out the pump had NPT fittings rather than BSP, so that was one wrong attempt. Now the camlocks don't fit.

I’m sure they can easily be made to fit each other. Possibly with the use of an extra rubber seal in the end of the female fitting

I think it would need a thinner seal rather than a thicker one from what I've seen (assuming female is ARAG and male is Banjo). Potentially could put the fitting on a lathe and take a bit of the lip off, but that's rather a faff. I have found a Snaplock fitting which is half the price which might fit. I wish they would standardise these things.

Arag may have had an extra o ring rather than a coupling seal then, we are sprayer contractors and basically have seals and fittings so that we are never unable to connect to a tank.

James,
Hiplock fittings were traditionally used by Chafer years ago, and are good but difficult to source now so best avoided.
My advice would be to stick with Banjo either end. They are good fittings and will last along time.

In times of shortage I sometimes use a Hiplock washer to seal slightly incompatible fittings as they are a bit fatter /thicker than the std black Banjo ones. Doubling up on Banjo ones will also work sometimes.
I did give Dave a list of the Banjo NPT fittings for your pump and part nos. Are they wrong?

Arag will be a metric standard, Banjo an imperial US standard. Arag couplings are probably as good as Banjo now, early ones were poor. Have filed male couplings to get a fit, and changed the rubber seals.

We have a slight resolution to the problem. I have picked up the new ARAG fittings which had been ordered a while ago. It turns out that the two Banjo fittings that I have will fit these new fittings, but don't seem to fit a few of the older ARAG ones. Billericay Farm Services have kindly sent some gaskets to make up a thinner O-ring for the ones that still don't fit. If we end up having to swap hoses around a lot, I think we'll file off a bit off the worst offenders.

Change them all to one, you will forever find yourself at the wrong tank with wrong fittings or seals

We have nearly all ARAG, except the pump which has an NPT thread. ARAG don't make anything in an NPT thread, only BSP. To change all the ARAG stuff, including the hoses on the sprayers, really would be a pain. I think, as per the above, that we can find a solution without resorting to buying all Banjo fittings at the cost of several hundred pounds.

It was 20 years ago we bought a metric sprayer and tried to marry it to our sytem . I remember a couple of years using different seals on different points even adaptors, which always leaked. I gave in in the end. Think we had to use a third party fitting which meant replacing every one. But every farm is different.
