Vet has suggested i might want to induce my other heifer.

Her teats seem very red. All 4 of them. Especially when she comes in off the grass. Does this bag look ok?

Looks alright to me.
Chill out and let nature take it's course - you must've run up a big enough vet bill with the first:whistle:

:LOL::LOL:

Sorry, didn't mean that in a snide way at all but most of the time breeding stock are best just left to get on with it. Your part in the operation should be 99% observation and 1% interference/assistance.

Thanks. Iv been worrying about the red teats for a while so good to know you think they look ok. My other heifer's wasnt like that.

Yeah, iv seen enough of vet bills for a while!!

Just before calving (or lambing for that matter) vulvas and udders become engorged with blood - it's a natural process. It just shows up more in animals that have lighter coloured skins.

That'll be what it is then! Thanks yeah she's light coloured so that explains it.

If it helps we have calved around 180 - 200 cows each year for a long time now and have no had to enduce any in all that time!

Just leave her and within a few days she will have a good healthy calve with her!

Similar to when women are pregnant and only a few days off, large, round, stiff and not much movement
Thanks bruce9001. With a 4 year old and 2 year old i remember it all too well. [emoji102]

All good advice above, surprised your vet' wants to induce - young or inexperienced? Everyone gets a bit nervous about important things they are doing for the first time. A typical cow is pregnant for 283 days; I've just had one that was nine days early and another two days early, others have been a range of days late. If she hasn't produced by the weekend you might want to get an experienced bovine vet' to give an opinion, but the pic' you posted looks to me like a cow getting ready to birth.

It takes days for the injections to work. That udder looks like it will calve before then anyway.

Few proven problems from inducing birth, but a retained cleansing slightly increased risk.

I'd only induce for a reason - number of big calves, problems with mum etc - not just based on a date.

For a heifer I would say that udder is not ready for calving, as your due dates would suggest. In response to above suggestions in my experience lack of milk would be due to inducing way to early, milk fever due to inducing cant see the link, surely feeding issues rather than inducing, I only do heifers or isolated cow that bags up and sits there, meaning its going to be a big bull calf and would wait several more days before calving, I use a steroid alongside estrumate, bang on 36 hours every time. Will agree more chance of retained, or mainly partly retained cleansing, but for me less hassle than a larger bull calf getting bigger and bigger, but no need willy nilly

Do not let your vet induce her !!! she's mad .You can let them go overdate by 3 weeks and still get a healthy calf.
Thanks everyone. Iv decided not to have her induced. I do think it'll be a big calf and obviously as i plan to sell the outfit a carsaerean is not wanted but il take that chance. Will review the situation next week again if anything changes e.g. she cant rise.
