He will probably get £30/40,000 for blackie tups in the next few days. So yes he is still a top breeder and folk will still buy his stock.Q. Is he still a ‘top breeder’ if he’s churning out lots of jaffas?

All good then. The basic ability to get ewes in lamb is obviously far less important than getting them looking bonny.
I’m really struggling to understand why increasing numbers are choosing to take control of their own breeding ewes, rather than buy in the descendants of such forward thinking.

A change in diet may save these rams, but don't expect them to be back to 100%.

was told by a regional chairman years ago turnover in the charollais world is av about 5-8 years ,
Ive never found charollais to be badly effected by overfeeding i think there high growth rate there able to handle it.Texel and beltex are a different story death in first winter is usually guaranteed

Such a divergent system from the reality of farming commercially will be lucky to last beyond the next big meat price trough. Little ever changes while an industry has high prices resulting in extra money sloshing around in the pockets of spenders.
The future of commercial pastoral farming can be summed up in the word EFFICIENCY, because of GHG emissions, environmental leakage and profitability. Relying on the future genetic direction of herds and flocks by how they are presented at sale time won't cut it.

Not sure what point you're trying to make but a lot of the big money Blackie men have big money Texel flocks too.
Went to a ram sale yesterday and was very disappointed 75% shouldn't have even been there in the first place I went in the pens for a closer look and half what I had picked on closer inspection were struck off my list. Couldn't believe what other people were buying. I came home with 2 I had picked out and would have struggled to get another. Hopefully they are not infertile as have not been overfed.
