Looked at open sided barn today which I intend leasing and took some measurements of bay size etc.
bays are 15ft wide by 17ft tall. Questions.
1. Would it be practical to use 17ft lengths of profile tin for sides and end or are they impractical to erect at that length (are they available).
2. How many bay cross bearers and what size, should I plan for , to support tin, bearing in mind barn in very exposed position.
3. End of barn is 9Mtr wide how many RSJ down supports do I need to carry cross bearers.
Names of reliable business that you have used and can supply all the above would be appreciated
Any info will be very helpful.

1) Tins that length no problem but get ones with mini ribs in profile and perhaps use 0.7mm for extra strength
2) Rails need to be max 1.5m (5’)
3) For gable ends one gable post will do in the middle which will give 4.572m bays (15’)

Thank you Bob,I will try and get some costs to get an idea of how much it will cost to clad a side bay

17ft (5.181 mtrs) are a pretty standard length that we supply, we can offer up to 31ft 2 in ( 9.50mtr ) in a single length but if I was to fit the sheets, I don't like going much over 6.00mtr due to handling, I would agree with Bob if you are in a high wind area I would be setting the rails no more than 1.50mtrs spacings have you thought of possibly using C sections rather than timbers?
Most customers will use 0.5mm for cladding the sides and the 0.7mm for roofing, but we do have a few regulars who prefer to use 0.7mm for all the sheeting.

Showing my ignorance I will have to Google “C sections”:scratchhead:.

Is their much difference in cost between cladding in Yorkshire Boarding (1inch gap) compared to using profile tin. Ideally like the idea of the solid tin as opposed to Yorkshire boarding letting in small amount of rain and blowing snow when I am processing firewood, but will be dictated by cost.

Both have advantages and disadvantages

I would think Yorkshire boarding would be considerably cheaper, still be cheaper if you put a board on the outside over every gap, people call this weatherboarding might be a good, cheap solution for you?

Have you not priced timber recently ? It has shot up in price this year
Boarding will be cheaper than box profile but not by as much as you think

its the other way around, I haven't priced metal sheeting since …..

£2.63 for 4" 12ft boards so 36 boards for standard 1" gap, only 12ft high though, =£94.68
x1.5= 18ft high =£142.02
based on 15ft bays

to board over top again £284.04

or could have a 2-3" gap?
3" gap = 26 boards per bay.

£136.76 to double board.

just a comparison ….

Priced some 6 x 1 boards today
25 to do a 15’bay by 18’ high
£146:00/bay
Plastic coated box profile would be around £175 for same area and quicker to put on
