Just another way that UK ag is showing how sustainable it can be. I like the idea of circular systems - turning waste into eggs, via some maggots.

No, I just read the paragraph or so that wasn't behind the paywall (which seemed to be most of the article?). I'm far too tight to pay for the FT.

Not so new, a chap in Wakefield kept pigs and poultry, when he lost a young pig in the spring or summer it was thrown in a steel dustbin let the blow flies in, he knew how long to leave it, then harvest the maggots and feed to the hens

He wasn't out to save money on feed for the hens, it just meant there was less to take to the knackers yard or to be buried, 50 years ago and less rules and regs.

Adm and a French company are building an insect based feed protein plant near me. It will utilize waste heat and use feed-stock from there bean processing facility.

Every egg sold in a Morrisons in England and Wales has travelled from the farm to a packhouse in North Yorkshire and then out to their stores. How many egg miles a year is that ? Any farmers want to greenwash the madness by messing about with the hens diets, you crack on.

used to be a maggot farm near us, for fish bait, the stench was appalling, Especially in summer, close car windows 1/2 mile before, and open 1/2 mile past.

This company have been around for a bit, had a few articles in various poultry magazines. Now, if you could somehow use deceased chickens as a feedstock for the betterorigin set up I would have one tomorrow.

5 tons of insects per year from each container is hardly going to solve the soya use problem!

To be honest, I think Better Origin are a bit like the Small Robot Company, their real aim is to harvest as much venture capital cash as they can, before selling the business on before anyone realises they haven’t got a viable product.

In the cycle of things, if your can't by law feed animals you intend to eat dead animals - not that normal and which seems like a good idea. Feeding insects dead animals which they would normally do, to animals that would nornally eat them seems like a step forward.
It's better than what is happening now.

Not saying I would eat it, but it is getting nearer my plate.
