Very odd calving this afternoon. Went and had a feel in a cow calving in the yard and felt 3 feet poking out, 2 front and 1 back. Further feel about felt very strange couldn't work it out, twins? But with some extremely odd limbs. Long and short was post successful c section a Schistosomus reflexus calf as shown below. Apparently pretty rare and no known cause. Cow doing well.

Whoops... Forgot to mention looks a tad grim. Hugely impressed with vet and more importantly his colleague who delayed going to hen do in favour of seeing this rare deformity and gaining valuable first hand experience; great commitment!

it may be the only one they come across in their careers, and hopefully yours. Did you ask is there any chance of heritability

We had one about 3 years ago, Holstein Friesian calf out of HF heifer.
Initially I thought she was prolapsing.
Caesar was the only way, vet said it was alive when he first put his hand in.
At the time we described it as being "a bit like an octopus"
Not nice & I hope I never see one again. Heifer never bred again afterwards

Had one here too. Made me scratch my head for fair while before calling vet and doing C-section, organ still functioning for short while after delivery. Vet called it a moon calf.

Had one 40 years ago and it was born live. You could see The heart beating.
Lived for 15 minutes or so.
Really awful experience I thought. Also made me think about some things doctors must see

We've had 2. 11 and 12 years ago. 1 bought in cow and 1 homebred. Both calves by different bulls and both c-section. Bought in cow didn't breed again but we got another calf out of homebred one. Don't want any more, as interesting as they are :)
