Insurance for sheep worrying

Aye-up,

Ive just read a piece in FW and it got me thinking .

A few years ago a farmer near here had a dog in his sheep, lots of damage and a couple of deaths. When he claimed on his insurance he was surprised and annoyed to find he wasn’t covered. He only keeps sheep so was very angry about it, thought it would be obvious. He fell out with the insurer about it and changed supplier, making sure he was covered.
A year later the renewal paperwork came through and he found there was no cover for dog attacks, called the insurance and got the cover sorted, no extra charge. Having learnt the lesson he was ready for it last year and had to make the call again to ensure he was covered.
I renewed our insurance recently and was surprised to see dog attack not covered even though I definitely had it the previous year. I called the broker (no complaints to them at all) and added the cover, no extra charge.
It just got me thinking, maybe there are lots of you who keep sheep, presume you have cover but don’t, what’s more you may need to request it every year.

Just a thought. ?

Cheers, Pete.

I suggest you use the word "livestock" rather than "sheep". I lost some valuable rare breed poultry due to my neighbour not keeping his dogs under control. His attitude changed when I pointed out that hens are livestock under the Act and I had a right to shoot the dogs.

Like all insurance you have to weigh up the risk and costs its likely to have a excess and a cost that can make it on the edge of being worthwhile.
We have had a few worried in the past but unless it's multiple deaths it's not worth claiming for.

Its on my cornish mutual ins , as an added extra (extra £200) full end market value , i took it up due to loosing best part of £10,000 worth of sheep over 5 years .
selling breeding rams as main income off of keep it could devastate a years work in a night , so still worth it
typically havnt had a problem with dogs since .

If you can shoot the dog or catch it then you have a claim against the owner of the dog . Most are covered by their house insurance . We are plagued with dogs with 2 farms on outskirts of Hereford . I shot a dog a few yrs ago and the owners took full responsibility and paid up via their house ins . 3 weeks ago I caught a dog that was chasing some ewes and injuring one ,which had to be shot , (the ewe) . Mr Plod came and picked up the dog scanned it for a chip,
then visited the owner and warned them that they either cough up for damage or they will be prosecuted. 2 days later they turned up with a bottle of wine for the OH and £250 cash for me . It also cost them to get the dog back as it was in the police kennels on full board and Lodge !
Around here Mr Plod does seem to take stock worrying quite seriously . I suppose if you have the dog then it's easy work for them .
I do realise though that you can't always get the dog or the owner and then ins is helpful .
