I find as soon as you tick business use and any driver over 25 on the comparison sites then they come to more than the farm brokerS quote and for less cover.

Another +1 for Acres and @Nigel Wellings. I’d been with NFU for some time and always asked for their best price however, after reading comments on here I decided to shop around and after speaking to Acres I decided that their policy and pricing was the one I’d go for. I saved thousands on my policies. When I rang the NFU to tell them that I wouldn’t be renewing my premium my agent said I should have pressed him harder as he could easily have knocked a grand of my premium without even looking at it. I can’t tell you how much that comment p’ed me off. When I’ve told friends and business associates that I’d swapped most said they knew the NFU were dear but at least you had piece of mind on insurance claims.
I’ve been unusually unfortunate over the last couple of months and have had to make a couple of claims with Acres. The service has been excellent, they were extremely helpful with my claims when I was busy and paid me out promptly. From my experience with them I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

We moved to NFUM two yrs ago from a broker and are still paying less for more cover of a more appropriate nature, with more covers and some newer, more valuable kit covered.
Not dissatisfied yet.

Interesting comments ref insuring the cars separately. Any other recommendations for a small fleet of cars/SUVs/pickups.

We saved a bob or two by putting our private car with Aviva a while back…. until we had a claim (someone else driving into Mrs NeilO) and discovered their promised courtesy car didn’t kick in until ours had been recovered, assessed and then the claim cleared.😡

I’ve moved the business insurance away, but the NFU have always been very competitive for the private car, so it’s stayed with them thus far.

@MrNoo - Cannot comment at all on price or service as no personal experience, but this chap is pretty local to me so might be worth a go given he's not too far down the road to give personal service.

Quick search on here shows @JP1 was a previous customer, as possibly was @sjewart - both may be able to provide some feedback.

Cameron is very good tbf . I’ve stuck with a different insurer for the last 2 years simply as they haven’t racked their rates up

The NFUM appear to have sharpened their pencils lately.
Have just renewed and although vehicle rates are toppish, the good thing is that most of our vehicles are any driver and some are for under 25's. Interesting that they used to be very expensive on Commercial vehicles but they are now competitive.

Having had some significant claims lately, well over £20k our protected no claims are still in existence.
They are a Mutual and they do have local regional advisors most of whom are farmers.
Not all Mutuals are the same, look at what is happening to LV!!

Just be sure when getting other quotes that they cover all the little things. I have used all the comparison websites and have never come up with any great savings , either on our house or car insurance when you put everything in.
Cars in particular as soon as you put any commercial work on it then it will be up there with the mutual or just absolutely forbidden. Even charity work!

Quite. It’s easy to get a lower rate of cover and it will look cheaper… until you need to claim.

However, when I moved my farm insurance away, I made a considerable saving (c.20%) and the cover was more extensive.
NFU did ask to quote 2 years later, but couldn’t get near it. I didn’t find that out until I chased them up, as they just didn’t bother sending the quote.

With car insurance there is always somebody somewhere that will insure it cheaper- generally via the comparison websites. BUT beware they will often have higher excesses, dont always give business use, often dont want young drivers and generally wont cover trailers. If you have to deal with them on a claim you are just a number and may (not always) suffer service wise.
Farm Brokers will generally insure cars and trucks on a small fleet basis. They will not always be the cheapest but generally cover will be wider and when you get a claim you should be able to speak to a nominated individual who works for You the client.

We moved away from NFUM to F&M then they lost out to Bluefin, then back to NFUM.
Get quotes, no reason to regard NFUM as any different to others. Why folks blackball them, no need to hold personal lack being bothered to seek quotes against them.

When I changed to Rural Insurance I was quite surprised how much broader cover I was getting compared with the Mutual

That's interesting, and as you say somewhat surprising given comments about the NFUM seen to be providing pretty comprehensive cover.

I was with Rural Insurance with a broker many years back.

Was that comparing farm or smallholder policies please?

We had been with CLA for years until they wanted a £400 increase this spring. NFU quoted similar so opted for MVF which was a big saving. Like others they tend to keep the vehicle fleet separate, probably because there's more claims in that sector. The worry is missing something out. We thought we covered everything like for like until someone mentioned the quad a month later.....

It's always important to know whether the company you are with (and those you are approaching for quotes) is a broker or an insurer themselves.

If you are insured through a broker, underwriters will be unlikely to quote you through another broker for the same insurance. It depends who the broker uses as to which underwriters they request to quote - not all brokers will always use the same. You may or may not save moving to another broker either, depending on why your current policies are uncompetitive - i.e. is it the underwriter, or the broker themselves?

If you are insured directly with the underwriter e.g. NFU Mutual then you can get quotes from anywhere you wish, but there is probably little point in approaching two brokers at the same time because both will likely be asking the same underwriters to quote.

Most Insurers charge about twice the rate for comp cover on ATV's and RTV's that they do for tractors. I used to think it was unfair that RTv's were charged this higher rate. Last couple of years prove Insurers were right. We get as many stolen RTV claims as we do ATV's.
Generally no insurer will cover an ATV or RTV in isolation(because they are a higher theft risk), it has to be added to your existing tractor insurance policy. Some Insurers will give a discount for any of the devices you mention but the "discount" is irrelevant it is overall bottom line that matters. An immobiliser and/or tracker I think is well worthwhile. Dont fit it for the discount(probably only around 10%) but to avoid the hassle of having to replace it if stolen. I would suggest reasonable premiums are £150 at £7000 value, £250 at £15 000 value.
Hope that helps.
