similar theme to my store lambs thread ! how viable is this ?

what kind size and capital requirement to build a modern, efficient unit on a green field site that could support 1 full time staff member ?

clearly I have access to straw and feed at ex farm vs bought in prices and it may create opportunity to grow crops like grain maize etc within my arable system

sorry about the idiot arable farmer questions re livestock but although i have been thinking i need livestock in my farming system for a few years I think it might now be time to actually do something positive about that !

i'm looking for the FYM as it key to improving arable soils and yields but also maybe a way to add value to the grain we grow in the process, also maybe create opportunity to grow crops I have no market for right now like grain maize

starting with a clean sheet and green field site what would you build ? how many head is a viable unit employing 1 full timer ?

I guess there must be systems that are really quite efficient ?

it would have to stand on it's own feet financially

why not broilers
with cattle if you are investing in buildings make sure they are dual use, dont get caught with an ivory tower that's useless for anything else

looked at chickens and even ducks a few years back - seemed overdone and not very profitable really, you also need a LOT to start producing any qty of muck

1000 head minimum if just finishing. Really you want to do them in batches of 50 to make managment easier. Cheap sheds will be okay, but spend the money and build a shed that can easily convert to a grain store, as feeding cattle with corn at £200 isn't good.

I think you should put up a shed for the winter and grass out some fields for the summer and get yourself a few suckler cows ;)
you will enjoy wandering round looking at them of an evening and they are very easy to keep (y)
the only problem is what breed to keep :scratchhead:

what kind of sq ft per animal is needed ? i.e. how big a site for 1000 head ? inc infrastructure like muck heaps, feed storage etc ?

just how much investment roughly done right ?

I think that when the weather settles and Clive can get back to combining, he will forget about wanting stock, and be in a happier place.
