Hello,

Im looking at a 956xl.

Anything to look out for before buying?

I know it’s over kill but it’s for a bit of haying work. Small baler and mower.
Would a 165 drum mower work or would you take half the mower cut out with the tractor width ?

Your drum mower might not clear hard to say as they are all a little different

Make sure the 956 starts from cold

Take good attention of the cab condition lift the mats etc

If you have the wheels set in and the mower pushed over to the right it may work. You might have to run on some cut swath. I manage with a 2m mower on an 8340 on 520 tyres.
It will not be a 40k if 2wd. Sometimes poor starters, often caused by starter not spinning the engine quickly enough.

Cheers everyone - are parts available if anything happens ?

Yes most parts readily available.
You can now get high speed geared start motors if it's turning over slowly.
More importantly check the hand brake is working ok.
Just make sure everything is working, hydraulics, gearshift etc.
Take a 32mm spanner with you & check the gearbox oil level, the gearbox & back axle oil are separate from the hydraulic oil & often get overlooked.
The level bung for the gearbox is on the LHS, you can see it on a plate if look through the LHS cab steps.
The rear axle level bungs are also 32mm you can see them easily from behind the tractor on each axle.

I would have a good at the front pillars where they meet the floor, have the cab mat up. Some skilled folk on the forum have done some very restorations of the XL cab but a lot of work and skill.

dont bother with a tractor that size for that sort of work, if your doing those sort of jobs we run a 8ft plain disc mower 6 rotor tedder and run a welger ap830 baler no issues behind a Case 885xl or a case DB1394. weve a 120hp tractor but thats more for road trailer work, the 956 that are for sale are usually crazy high hours ( recently had a dealer try and sell me a 2wd one with 11k hours on for 18 grand. you can buy a NH TM for that sort of money.) all your doing is pricing yourself into bigger implements such as mowers as your loosing your effective working width with the offset. if i were you id be looking for a 885xl or 4230XL avoid the 856 as these were heavily used for overweight work due to their punchy nature and are generally burnt out at this age unless your lucky and win the lottery to buy a restored one.

I take your point there but I used our 4wd drive 956 for small scale hay making. A lot will depend on the condition and price as to what the OP should buy.

If it’s anything like a few of the case IH restore boys want nearer 15-20k second hand values on these are always high. Just make sure it’s not that 2wd one that’s been sat on eBay well over 2 years missing a door.
