Our kids, same as most are stuck at home working from devices.

Some of the apps that the school are using won't work with later ios versions. Think we're still on ios 9!

There iPads would be 7 and 8 years old. Is there a way of upgrading them before I spend £700 on new devices?

Looks like there going to continue home learning for sometime. Schools going to want them to take in there own devices to stop virus spread from sharing devices.

Have you considered getting second hand ones? Bit like buying a 2 or 3 year old car instead of a new one, let someone else pay the depreciation. I've done that with my Phone whenever I've changed, buying second hand off Ebay. You obviously need to be careful with who you're buying from but it's not that tricky to spot genuine sellers.

Good luck

Just do an update in the settings. Mine is 6 years old and on 12.4.7

Are you doing any of the home schooling? I’m personally really struggling with it and my eldest is only P1.

This might help you check which version of IOS your ipads can support.

No I'm being a sh!t parent as usual. My wifes a primary school teacher so knows what she's doing. We've a p1 and p4.

I've managed to download iTunes onto my office laptop and looks like one is going to update from there. It's a huge file though 2.7gb the laptop has to download it first then upload it to ipad.

Will be a major boost if it works, my dad has a couple of apple devices not running properly because of old ios version too.

So would be a major boost if can update them all through laptop.

This is the correct way to do it. Once you own it under your Apple ID, iTunes will then allow the older version of the app to be downloaded onto the device.

Any iPad six years old or older will not load updates.
New iPads can cost less than you think.Try www.krcs.co.uk for business discounted prices plus the normal education discounts that your children and wife qualify for. iPad 7th Gen 10.2" wi-fi with the essential 128GB costs £324+VAT on the education discount scheme. Otherwise I think it is £405 at krcs or £449 at most Apple retailers

Don't get a 32GB version or they'll never forgive you.

Older iPads will no longer work with some old apps. This is due to the change from 32 bit to 64 bit machines and apps. There was some overlap but certainly you will not get newer 64bit apps to work with older iPads.
