The current iPhone SE is mid-price at £390 for the 64GB version. It is basically a faster iPhone8 with better camera features. My 64GB 8 64GB has only half its memory full so far but has access to most all the files in iCloud. Photos are very well managed in iPhones these days, using the HEIC file format which is more compact than JPEG. Also there is the option of optimising storage by only keeping tiny files on the device but downloading the full file when necessary to view in all its glory. This is how I can access nearly 100,000 photos and videos on my iPhone while only having 36GB out of 64 used, Apps and IOS taking more than half the occupied storage.
I have no hesitation in saying that this is good value for anyone wanting to stay in the Apple ecosystem. Its so easy to back everything on the old phone to the Cloud [which should be set as the default automatically anyway] and to restore absolutely everything to the new phone using just wi-fi.

The iPhone 12 and 13 models, starting with the Mini which actually has a screen about the same size as the SE but in a smaller body, are alternatives. The cheapest 12 mini starts at nearly twice the price of the SE and you get, what, for the extra money? Is the extra cost worth it? That's up to the individual to decide.

Now ... 'we' are wondering about the 12 mini as it says it has a better camera .... does it?

Yes it does but how much do you need a batter camera?
A bit like getting a car that will do 200mph over one that will only do 150mph but you are only ever going to use it on a road with 70mph maximum.

I have a 12 mini and I quite like it for its size as far as fitting in a pocket goes but my eyesight would like a bigger screen.

Yes. Ages ago. Not been a bother.
Same here. Updates take some storage room to download and update but they do not take up all that room permanently. The old OS is mostly deleted automatically. Otherwise all the new OS versions I’ve had over the years would have swamped the storage of my machines. It hasn’t, so as long as you check what spare memory is available beforehand and that it is enough for the update, it should be fine. I suspect that if there is no room, you will be warned before downloading anyway.

So do we go 12mini or 13mini ???
128gb as thats what i have on my 5SE
How much of the 128GB have you used up? Its usually mostly photos and music that takes up the most space. Especially music. I use Amazon Music and have very few tracks actually downloaded on my phone. More to my desktop. I let the phone stream my music to save space. Photos are also iCloud based with originals only on my desktop and iCloud, not on iPhone or iPad. Of course original size Photo files do stream to my phone or pad in original quality, any of 60,000 including videos, on clicking on the desired thumbnails on the phone.
