iPhone and car radio

Got an iPhone 12 and software is all up to date. Previously when getting into my car (VW Touareg) I’d plug the phone into the usb charger so it charged it. The phone would connect to the car so it was hands free. I could then play you tube music app by just starting the app on my phone and it would take over.

However all of a sudden I can’t connect to the you tube app unless I select the ‘media’ button on the car radio and then when I try to play the you tube app the Apple Music app just takes over. I then have a battle with it for about 30 seconds where I’m pressing the you tube app but the Apple Music keeps taking over. Eventually I win but I’m pressing the app button numerous times to win.

I tried disconnecting the phone to the car and reconnecting but it makes no difference. I should add this has been working for 4 years so I’ve no idea why it’s changed but it’s doing my head in. Any ideas?

Just a guess but are you now connecting to the car's data/charging USB socket rather than a piggy lighter adapter, while also connecting via Bluetooth? Try disabling one or the other and see whether this changes anything.

Have you tried connecting to youtube before plugging in the USB.
Must admit I've never had need to charge the phone while in the car,

No real help, but I've just been and plugged my phone(Android) in (Tiguan) it just started charging and tried to connect via Bluetooth, selected YT on phone and picked some music.

I'm also have iPhone 12 issues, really regretting the upgrade and thinking of reverting to the 8.
Won't connect to the van handsfree, no longer talks to the PC and being a muppet, I cant work out how to get the answer phone to work 🤷‍♂️

We tend to have maybe 6 or 7 different phones paired to some of the van radios and have experienced similar problems with an iPhone 12 - Delete them all and try again, that usually works 1st time then ….Anything with ApplePlay and a cable connection always works well..
