Green Oak,

Speak to David Redman at Case and ask him what the job should cost?
In some instances Case will have suffered multiple events similar to yours, and will subsidise repair cost to customer since they know you will not buy their product again otherwise, nor many reading this.

Did the dealer help by supplying a tractor to keep you going at a busy time? Did they discount parts at all?
15% discount on parts. And £2188 on labour. No tractor help From case. But had a a fendt. Massey and new holland on demo.

Farmers always tell me I’m a mug to hire. But to me the increasing complexity of these machines means I am far more comfortable hiring/leasing. Depends on ones mindset I guess.

£100/hour is a lot but its fairly easy to see how they come to such a figure the mechanic has to earn enough for the business to pay the costs of the business, building, equipment, office staff ,managers all other costs etc etc its just that farmers cant and so consider £100/ hour excessive but cant see things changing if I divide my farm income by the hours worked it doesnt come near but it should

we have a puma 155 in to have a gearbox split but I don't pay the bills so not sure on cost, but a story of main dealers ripping you off, my sister hit a pheasant with her car a couple of weeks ago, smashed the grill and cracked the bumper, local Suzuki garage was gonna replace bumper and grill for a total of £680  local garage that does our MOTs couldn't believe the price, he got the new grill for @£30 and put a bit of fibreglass on the back of bumper, looks like new (y) not seen final bill but will be around £100

To be honest, 680 for a new bumper, sprayed and fitted, and grill fitted, probably isn't far away. It's just that theres a cheaper way of doing it.

I had a prob a few years ago.
Head gasket, booked into main dealer as very low hrs for age.

They managed to get the bill to £10,400. Approx. Without any warning to me.

There was a happy ending after a lot of hassle the manufacturer paid for the parts.
We still run the brand today.

But the dealers should offer an estimate at the early stages of repairs.
This is all getting out of hand whatever the brand.

Go to MD of dealer, show him the invoice and ask him to look you in the eye and tell you that's a fair price( knowing for sure yourself that a fair price has already been quoted in here). Even if you successfully negotiate it down, they have already tried to shaft you so just name the dealer, now.

He dont need to name. Its printed on the can in pic by looks of it:ROFLMAO:

Did you get a price for the job, before work started?

There’s some good advice above. If the work of this size was not quoted from the start then you are on the back foot - however to get back on the front foot you need to scrutinise this invoice to death and then negotiate it (it’s not too late). Get the dealer to substantiate each and every line item - there could be double counting of labour and all sorts of things.

No business just lays down and just pays an invoice like this if they want to survive. You need to do your homework on it and then fight your corner big time with the dealer.
