No reason to be put off sensible investment,
If the system is profitable, why not expand it?
For me with sucklers through to finish any expansion has to reduce work per head, feeding another pen of cattle takes no extra time so should leave equal profit to existing pens?

Next shed I put up will be a slatted tank but will be laid out so cubicles could be put in just incase a dairy change comes!
Interesting, but do you properly cost how much a weaned calf costs from your suckler herd into your store/finishing unit?

If there is little profit from the weaned calves then you have to ask why keep the cows, why not buy suckler type stores and twice as many?

If beef prices weakened further due to imports then sucklers will be the first to take the hit....and already have.

With regard to genetics beef has hit a wall really but sheep improvement keeps marching on.

Does anyone ever thank you for bringing another 10 beast into the supply chain,I guess not.

Expansion all depends on how efficient logistics on farm are so suits some more than others however using a calculator rather than a concrete mixer is the first step.

Yes I cost suckled calves but you can make the figures fit how you want, also at what age you "sell" them across I bought some stores early November that were at least £150 cheaper than December/January when bps had come!

By doing both I feel I'm taking the volatility out a little, I don't graze a second summer, cattle are finished 12-15 months old cereal based ration

I make sure both sides of the business (and arable aswell) hold their own

And for those that can't see the light, their consultant tells them to buy a bigger bulb :Do_O
Well today I am mostly thinking of the Scottish Divergence cash ( for underpayments in 6 of the years I was farming , for which I will get zilch ). Or I could think about farming all my life on LFA ground , but also getting zilch ( for the most part , because we dared to stick with dairy cows). Not forgetting the near million litres of milk quota I had to buy, and First Milk nearly destroying us in 2016 followed by the climate disaster of 2017. Seriously - glad I escaped alive !

You’re right,we also bought half a dozen weaned suckler calves in November, average quality and they were very reasonable.

Its the little things which add up,we bank with HSBC and they have put .25% on their overdraft arrangement fee.It may not be a huge amount but just think how by pressing a button they will take millions more from their customers,a lot being farmers.

I got rid off HSBC for a few reasons, we e don't use cards much but had a rainy day so bobbed here and there got a call, said from bank but I didn't believe the chap so told him where to go I wouldn't tell him my details and they locked my account! Also due to some change they wanted a form filling out that had a million nosy questions. Yorkshire Bank now, no bother at all.

Your card hadn’t been used much, then suddenly there was a lot of activity on it. The bank picked up on that as ‘unusual behaviour’ and contacted you to check it was legit, which obviously needed a few security questions answered.
I would consider that good, in that they might have stopped some scroat emptying your account after pinching/cloning your card.

Oh I thought it was good, but they should ask if name address is correct or give me something, he wanted me to tell everything, all questions aswell, we laugh about it now

as long as they don't start putting interest on our o/d's of 30/40% ! They must be running scared of doing something else that is dodgy, so back to daylight robbery instead.

I have said many times that there should be security both ways. They ask us questions and we can ask them similar questions.
