There is a difference between being self sufficient and being net importers or exporters of food is there not? Be interesting to know those figures.

Something i've often wondered, when they talk about being x% self sufficient in food, how is it measured ? Financial value ? Calories ? Volume of basic foodstuffs ?
Say it was financial value, by reducing the amount of brie/ champagne/ avocados you imported you would on paper increase your self sufficiency, but in terms of feeding your population nothing would have changed.

Depends what the population want to eat. Meat, veg , seasonal fruit, bakery products, I’m sure we could. Exotic fruits, year round veg, rice etc, not a hope.

We can do the exotic fruits and veg but it would require specific planning by government and industry.

For example using the by product heat from powerstations which is currently vented as steam in cooling towers.

Yes we can produce those things under glass. One snag would need planning permission together with crazy expensive bat and newt surveys etc so won't happen and so let them all go without and keep their imaginary bats and crap instead of food. Crazy place.

Food supply is a national security issue. Avocados aren't - that is about politics.
At some point these two will collide, not enough variety won't kill you, but it might do for the Government and it might make a large dent in democracy. Think China, Russia or USA in January.

At times of crisis you need calories, currently we are still in avocado territory.
How bad can it get and how quickly? I would want to know we could always manage our way out of a calorie crisis which could arrive quite quickly but still worry about the political one.

China is buying farms in different geographical regions - I think they are dealing with more than the calorie problem, they are spreading the political risk. Sadly this is something that you can only do if you are one of the top two.
America? not so much.

And does it include waste?
If we waste 40% then we don't need to import anything or produce more, just stop wasting stuff:unsure:
