Its a business, most business men get huge enjoyment and fulfilment out of earning as much money as they possably can, the rest,? well they just moan and bitch about their bad lot and go backwards.

Some people, believe it or not, are happy that their business net income is sufficient for living expenses and inward investment.

Perhaps they could make more money doing something else, but growing and developing a business gives fulfillment that can't be bought.

They get enjoyment from their vocation, their way of life, their friends, their family, and are content.

Capitalistic greed, showing off a chipped shoulder, and a need to make themselves feel better by demeaning others aren't things that give them enjoyment.

You could try it sometime?

Guess if the hay shed's empty then you haven't been cutting enough grass when the sun shone.

But you don't have to have built five sheds to fill with hay if one is enough to keep you from being hungry?

If he wants the connection then he should buy 100 ac and let it out using his decent salary to help fund it. He will probably be on 100k in 5 years if he's any good. The FBT should allow him unhindered access to the property at all time. He will very likely see some poor sod struggling to pay the rent and change his mind before he buys any cows! He will have the enjoyment of his bit of countryside though.

Why is everyone so hung up on how much money could be earned?

What value enjoyment and fulfillment from your vocation?
I agree!

A lot of people could help themselves by getting out of something that seems to make them constantly complain and be miserable, farmers included.

Everyone has choices.

3 potentially issues i see.

1. Getting the land at a reasonable price.(each to there own with this 1, what i may see as reasonable the next man may not)

2. Its a tb Hotspot(probably the biggest issue outside of his control)

3. His skill set. Big jump jumping straight in. It takes a lot to run a tight ship and dairy farms are tough hes been how many years out of the game?

Also making me smile is the lack of dairy farmer input and the abundance of people who are no way willing to milk cows advising someone else not to milk cows. (Some proper miserable pansys in general).

1 question how is this any different to someone on a fbt?

He's managing the hardware section of a £38million engineering project so I think he has quite good business skills.

Really? The job that one holds is not always a sign of ones skills, we all know someone who shouldn't really be in the job they are in.

Your friend may have business skills, I don't know the guy, but being in charge of a large budgeted project is unlikely to develop business skills any more than being a self employed one man band.
Plenty of multi million pound projects turn into a laughing stock. No point naming them, we all know plenty.

1. It sounds like a now or never type deal. The situation with family friends offering up a place to rent at reasonable money. So the option to work another 5 years then go into it probably isn't there.
2. Security of tenure would be my biggest concern. If the owners are retiring they may be a good age. And if it passes into the next generation they may be keen to get rid as soon as possible. I would look for a minimum of a 10 year deal if he is going to be investing in dairy equipment and livestock
3. Timing is probably spot on. Brexit has the subby junkies shitting themselves so may be reducing the chance of someone cutting his feet off.
4. As I think @GTB often says it may well not pay to maximise absolute potential stocking density of it Meens you are using all your time supporting that last extra 10 cows with bought in forage etc.
5. Vertical integration. Get some of those vending machines and put them in London. This ties in with 4 Nd not tying up all his time chasing absolute production.

Folk who want to farm because they want to will make money, because they have the drive and ambition and grey matter to think things through. People who don't farm notice on farms the new pickup, new family car, new sheep trailer, new tractors, shooting trips, large house. Then farmers harp on about not making any money. And when people want to start or return to farming are met with the " don't do it " answer there's no money in it. It does confuse people. Comparison on a thought process can be drawn with the 30 year famine in Africa. The TV still shows people who are starving but they still manage to have sex which is proven by the large volume of babies and children. So then people think things can't be that bad even after 30 years they still bonk each other.
